Lucan Irish not always lucky in shootouts
By Ben Forrest
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
LUCAN As Lucan Irish coach Russ Morningstar
knows, a game decided by shootout can be a blessing
or a curse.
The Irish experienced both sides of this coin last
week, winning 3-2 in a shootout against Wellesley on
Nov 5 but losing 5-4 in a shootout against Mt. Brydges
on Nov. 8.
I think we took Wellesley a little bit for granted,
Morningstar admitted. They didn t have a very good
record coming in, but they made a coaching change,
and now they re doing a fantastic job.
I think our boys kind of sat back, and they shouldn t
have.
The game was scoreless after one period and Welles-
ley pulled ahead mid -way through the second frame.
Lucan s Zack Yeo evened the score at 3:36 in the third
period on a goal assisted by David Latta and Jimmy
Kim.
Lucan s Dustin McTaggart then added a goal of
his own, with assists from Nick Engel and Luke Mc -
Clary.
Wellesley tied the game with 1:17 remaining, send-
ing the game to overtime. Lucan managed two goals
in the shootout, while Wellesley scored only one.
Lucan surrendered three goals in the first period Saturday
against Mt. Brydges, and neither team scored again until early
in the third.
Yeo scored just before the three-minute mark, assisted by
Tyler Medd. Irish player Chris Van Kasteren added a goal of
his own three minutes later, before Mt. Brydges Nick Engel
answered back.
Irish players Nick Engel and Adam Hartman added goals
late in the third, sending the game to overtime.
Mt. Brydges player Jeff Bradley was the only player to score
in the ensuing shootout, icing his team s victory in the pro-
cess.
I didn t think we played very well in the first, and it cost
us, said Morningstar. Down 3-0 against Mt. Brydges in their
barn ... is a pretty tough task to come back to. But I thought we
showed a lot of perseverance. The boys did a good job in the
third and we were able to come back and at least tie it up.
After the first period was over, Morningstar encouraged his
players to leave it in the past.
I just told them, Don t worry about the first. There s noth-

during a Nov. 5 game. (Photo/
ing you can do about the first, he said. It s over and done
with. We ve got a bit of an uphill climb, but let s just see what
happens the rest of the game and see if we can t improve.
The Irish play next on Wednesday, a home game vs. Exeter.
Morningstar expects the Hawks to be hungry for a playoff spot,
and anticipates that tough goaltending may be an obstacle.
They want that final playoff spot, he said. I know it s a
long way to go, but they re going to come out, they re going to
be playing us hard.
They need to scratch every point they can, and we want to
keep pace with the leaders.
I think the biggest thing with Exeter (is) their goaltending,
he said. If they get good goaltending like they did against Mt.
Brydges, they re going to be pretty tough.
The Irish face second -place North Middlesex on Saturday
a game that is winnable in Morningstar s mind if the Irish
are able to dictate the style of play.
The biggest thing is not be overwhelmed by Parkhill,
Morningstar said
They ve got some good forwards, and if we let them bring
the game to us then we re going to have a hard time, but if we
take the game to them and we play our style, then I think we
can be pretty successful.
Panther junior girls' basketball team fares
well at Huron -Perth
EXETER The South Huron District
High School Junior Girls Basketball
team ended the regular season with a
31-19 win over the Listowel Lightening
Wed., Oct. 29.
The Lightening kept the game close
in the first half but the Panthers estab-
lished their press in the second half to
pull away. The win gave the Panthers
a record of eight wins and three losses,
good for fourth place overall.
This placement in the standings meant
the Panthers got to host a quarter fi-
nal match Mon., Nov 3 against the St.
Anne s Eagles. On the line was a first
place berth in the WOSSAA champion-
ship tournament.
Panthers Oust Eagles in
Quarter -finals
In their quarter final match against the
St. Anne s Eagles Mon., Nov 4, the Pan-
thers were hoping to avenge the six point
loss the Eagles handed them during the
regular season. The girls started strong
when Taelor Douglas opened their scor-
ing with two three-point shots.
The half-time score was 20-14 for the
Panthers. The Eagles dug deep, howev-
er, playing the Panthers tough in a score-
less third quarter and pulling within one
point with less than two minutes to go.
In those two minutes the Panthers
scored two unanswered baskets to win
27-22.
Taelor Douglas led all scorers with
eight points followed by Chelsea Brint-
nell with six and Jaemi Douglas with
five. Taylor Mattucci had
four points, including back-
to-back free throws, while
Taylor Obre and Morgan
Cooper rounded out the
scoring with two points
each.
The win secured top spot
in the WOSSAA 'AA' Cham-
pionships hosted by South
Huron on Wed., Nov. 12.
The games run from 9 a.m.
to 9 p.m. in the large gym
at SHDHS and the public is
welcome to attend. The Pan-
thers first game is at 10:30
a.m.
Panthers' HP Run
Ends with Semi-
final Loss
Wed., Nov 5 the Panthers'
Junior Girls basketball team
travelled to St. Micheal's in
Stratford to face the league
leading Warriors in the semi-
finals.
The Warriors' coach Tim O'Connor said
afterward his team was very focused
during its preparation for the Panthers
and it showed.
The game was close in the first quar-
ter which the Warriors led 10 - 6 after
the Panthers uncharacteristically missed
several freethrows. The Warriors broke
the game open with 12 unanswered fast
break points in the second quarter and
Rebound Chelsea Brintnell (34) and Taylor
Mattucci (35) wait for a rebound that won't be
coming. The shot was good and the Panthers went
on to win their quarter -final against St.Anne's
27-22.
the Panthers could not recover.
The speed of the Warriors' man-to-man
defense frustrated the Panthers' shooters
throughout the game which ended 47 -
19 for the Warriors. In spite of the loss,
coach Russ Watson said he was very
proud of the Panthers and the great sea-
son they had in Huron -Perth.
He said the girls are still very positive
and looking forward to hosting and do-
ing well in the the WOSSAA 'AA' tour-
nament November 12.
