The Times Advocate, 2008-11-12, Page 15Wednesday, November 12, 2008 Times -Advocate 15 Bike collection project meets goal HURON Organizers of the Bicycles for Humanity project want to thank Huron County for making the collection of used bicycles to sent to Namibia, Africa, a suc- cess. Collection points closed Nov. 1 and the target of receiving 400 used bicycles was met. Organizers say the donated bicycles will make a big difference to a person in Namibia. Hav- ing a bicycle will improve medical care, it will im- prove access to food and water, employment, education and social opportunities. In the next two months efforts will be put forth to re- ceive financial do- nations and have fundraisers to buy the container and pay for the shipping, which is estimated to cost about $12,000. The goal is to have the container on the way by the end of December 2008. The Bicycles for Humanity committee is excit- ed to have several youth groups commit- ted to raising funds, so watch for upcom- ing fundraising events in the area. Also, Sun., Nov. 30 will feature a night of music including local choirs, The Men of Note, Women of Noted, and other musi- cians at the Blyth United Church at 7 pm. Everyone is welcome, and a donation box will be at the entrance, with proceeds going to Bicycles for Humanity. There are some church offerings coming up for the cause, and some individuals have already given donations. The committee is looking for people to volunteer their time to help prepare the bikes for shipping and help load the con- tainer on the actual shipping date. If you can help with that or if you have a fundraising idea or would like to make a donation contact Jack or Sylvia Nonkes at 519-523-9456, or Rev. Gary Clark at 519-523-4380 or 523-4224. To donate make a cheque payable to the Blyth United Church or Blyth Christian Re- formed Church with the memo written out to Bicycles for Humanity. The address for both churches is Blyth, Ont., NOM 1H0.
