Hawks suffer consecutive losses vs. Wellesley, North Middlesex

EXETER Had only the first and third
periods counted in the Exeter Hawks Sun-
day game against North Middlesex, Exeter
would easily have won.
But an eight -goal outburst by North
Middlesex in the second frame placed the
Hawks in a hole they could not climb out
of.
Exeter led the game 2-1 after the first peri-
od, but trailed 9-5 after the second. They al-
lowed no goals in the third and added one
of their own, the game ending in a 9-6 loss.
Goaltending was definitely not the is-
sue, during the game, said Hawks head
coach Jamie Pearce.
I m not big on excuses, but we were
down to three regular defencemen on the
weekend due to injuries and sickness, he
said. We also were short up front.
Still, Pearce believes the team should have
played better, and said this is something the
team will be addressing in the days ahead.
He cited defensive zone coverage as
one cause of the team s second -period melt-
down, refusing to lay the blame entirely on
the team s defence or goaltending.
He also allowed that he may not have
prepared the team well enough.
Though North Middlesex is a difficult op-
ponent sitting in first place, Pearce claims
not to be consoled by this.
If we can beat them for the first period
2-1 and we can beat them in the third pe-
riod 1-0 ... that s a bitter pill to swallow,
he said.
Scoring has never been a problem since
I ve been there, he added. It s been keep-
ing the puck out of the net.
The silver lining is that things are going
to get better. We re getting some systems
into place and we re just going to work it
day by day.
The Hawks next two games are against
second -place Mt. Brydges, who Pearce ac-
knowledges is another tough opponent.
We re just going to prepare the team
with a couple more systems that need to be
implemented by them, he said. They re
smart kids. If they re willing to put these
systems into play, we will have success.
Pearce likes his chances against any team
in the league, however, saying, I believe
we have a talented hockey club, that we can
compete with any team in this league.
The key to getting the team s future suc-
cess will be, Getting guys to believe in the
systems that are being presented to them
and hard work, he said. A lot of it boils
down to hard work.
Wellesley game
The Hawks surrendered another difficult
loss Oct. 24 against Wellesley.
The game was tied (1-1) after the first pe-
riod, though Exeter pulled ahead in the sec-
ond period leading 4-2 at the buzzer.
Wellesley exploded for four goals in the
third period, however, and the game ended
in a 6-5 Exeter loss.
It was a game we had and we gave it
away, Pearce acknowledged. We lost that
game.
The Hawks next home game will be Fri-
day at 8:30 p.m.

Irish coach still seeks a full 60
minutes of play from team
By Ben Forrest

LUCAN Lucan Irish coach Russ Morningstar s
mantra of late has been that his team needs to put
out a strong effort for entire games a full 60 min-
utes, as he puts it.
Though they fell short of this goal Saturday against
Mount Brydges, they came much closer Sunday
against Lambeth.
(Against) Mount Brydges I didn t think we played
that well, said Morningstar in an interview. We
didn t play as a unit or as a team, so whenever you
do that, you re going to obviously fail.
If we re going to win games, we ve got to play
four lines, we ve got to roll, and wear teams down,
he added. Against Mount Brydges we just didn t
play as a unit, and that haunted us.
For Morningstar, there is no team in the league Lu -
can can t beat on a given night.
On the other hand, he admitted, If we don t
bring our A -game and don t play as a unit, we re go-
ing to get beaten on any given night, too.
Against Mount Brydges, which sits in second place
in the Southern Ontario Junior Hockey League s
Yeck Conference, the team s A -game appeared to
be absent.
Lucan opened the scoring early in the first period
on a goal from Kevin Dean, but surrendered three
goals in the second period.
Lucan s Adam Hartman struck next, scoring a
power play goal at 11:22 in the third period, but
Mount Brydges answered back with two goals, win-
ning the game 5-2.
Sunday s game against Lambeth was a much more
complete effort, in Morningstar s mind.
I thought we played about 50 minutes out of 60,
he said. We got up by a couple of goals, and every
time we do that we kind of take our foot off the accel-
erator. It just comes down to consistency and focus
and wanting to put together the full 60 minutes and
not just bits and pieces of a game.
Neither team scored in the first period, and Lam-
beth opened the scoring during the second period
with a goal from Sonny Daniels.
Alex Regan tied the game for Lucan, then Adam
Hartman scored twice to put the Irish ahead for
good.
Lucan added two more goals, courtesy of Zack Yeo
and Adam Hartman, and surrendered two, the game
ending in a 5-3 Irish victory
Hartman s four goals in two games contributed to
an experiment that has been working well in Lucan
of late: he and Regan have been moved from defence
to forward spots, and have been a boon to the Irish
offence.
Hartman has 19 points through 11 games, while
Regan has 10 points in as many games.
Some teams would think we re crazy, but two of
the best defencemen in the league we put up on for-
ward this season, said Morningstar.
The move was made, he said, because both players
can adapt to any situation.
We felt we were pretty deep on the back end, and
that we re a little weak up front, he added. We
thought those two guys would definitely be able to
step in and play in any situation we ask them to, and
they ve done just that.
The goal remains getting 60 minutes of cohesive
play out of the entire team, however, and the team is
slowly getting there, Morningstar said.
Mount Brydges was a little bit of a step back, but
against Lambeth I thought we played pretty well as a
unit, and all of the lines were playing well, he said.

Ayr at 7:45 p.m.
