At the Oct. 20 council meeting, Lucan Biddulph Deputy Mayor Perry Caskanette reported that the BRA plans to replace blue boxes with larger, wheeled bins that would be sorted primarily by an automated sys- tem. The new bins would be lidded to repel water and sealed to keep odours inside, ac- cording to the BRA website. They would also reduce blowing litter and animal scavenging, the website states. Two sizes would be offered: a 65 -gallon model that stands 42 high and a 95 -gallon model that stands 45 tall and is intended for families. The future is automation and big bins, Caskanette told council. Caskanette is Lucan Biddulph s representative on the BRA board. He said that through the new au- tomated system, BRA can sort its material three times faster than it does now, and that the system has already been implemented in St. Marys. BRA is considering an $11 mil- lion retrofit to its facility in Huron Park to accomodate the system, and would reduce its workforce of sorters from 12 people down to six, Caskanette told council. Fewer trucks will be needed, he said, noting that BRA hopes to have four automated trucks on the road in 2009. Council and municipal staff raised a number of questions and Board appoints director of ed. HURON -PERTH The Hu- ron -Perth Catholic District School Board announced the appointment of Martha Dutrizac to the position of director of education effective Jan. 1, 2009. Board chairperson Bernard Mur- ray stated, I am delighted to an- nounce that Martha Dutrizac has been appointed as director. In her previous position as superinten- dent with the board, Martha has motivated staff and students to achieve outstanding success and has shown that she is a person who is dedicated to her faith. We are confident that she will continue to build a distinctive vision of Catho- lic education that will permeate all aspects of learning in the Catholic schools of Huron and Perth. I also would like to offer a huge vote of thanks to our present director, Lar- ry Langan, who has served us well over the past six years. Dutrizac has a proven track re- cord in educational leadership. The board states Dutrizac is an accom- plished leader with many years of dedicated service and leadership in Catholic schools. She has been a supervisory officer for the past six years where she has held a variety of portfolios. Prior to this appoint- ment she served in many leader- ship positions with the London District Catholic School Board. Dutrizac commented that she is honoured to accept the position of the director of education for the Huron -Perth Catholic District School Board. concerns at the Oct. 20 council meeting, including the suggestion that elderly resi- dents might not want to move to larger bins. But Caskanette told the group he has been told the larger bins are easier to move than a blue box. In an interview, Caskanette noted that the BRA executive voted unanimously to approve the new system, and that the pro- posed changes would be implemeted in a stepped fashion starting next year. Caskanette made it clear that he is not a member of the executive, and was not part of the decision-making process. All of the things I heard ... were really news to me, he said. It wouldn t be news to the executive. So I go, I listen, I ask ques- tions, I report back to council what I hear. If everyone brought information back to their councils and every council jumped up and screamed, the executive might look at it again, he said. But it sounds like a reasonable course of action. He said there will not be layoffs during the move to automated sorting, noting the BRA hopes to reduce its workforce through retirements and choosing not to replace workers who move on to other jobs natu- rally. Caskanette anticipates that the BRA will be initially targetting urban rather than ru- ral areas as it moves toward automation, though he doesn t see Lucan Biddulph as a likely candidate for the first wave. We d probably be in that second group ... but that s speculation on my part, he said. Caskanette expressed the belief, howev- er, that more information on the potential changes needs to be distributed to munici- palities, noting he and the rest of council had many questions.
