EXETER—The South Huron District High School Panthers junior girls' basketball team continued its strong play Oct. 15, as they played host to the Mitchell Blue Devils and the Stratford Northwestern Huskies. In the first game the Panthers played well and stayed with the Blue Devils for the first half, trailing 16-20 at the break. In the second half Mitchell kicked it up a notch and went on an 8-0 run as the Panthers' shooting went cold, leaving them with a 25-38 loss. Jaemi Douglas led all scorers with eight points, while Linette Melick and Chelsea Brintnell added seven points each. Erin Wells with five, Taelor Douglas with four and Gina Phouttharath with two rounded out the Panthers' scor- ing. The Panthers resumed play in the afternoon against the Stratford Northwestern Huskies and like their first game, the teams seemed evenly matched as indicated by the halftime score which stood at 17-15 in favour of the Huskies. Unlike the first game, the Panthers dug deep and outscored their opponents by four points in the second half to notch a thrilling 35- 33 win which wasn't decid- ed until the last shot of the game. Taelor Douglas had the hot hand in the game, scor- ing a season high 17 points including five three-point shots. Chelsea Brintnell added six points and Jaemi Douglas had five. Also scoring for the Panthers were Linette Melick with three while Taylor Obre and Gina Phouttharath with two points each rounded out the scoring. The Panthers continued their strong play by win- ning the Mustang Invitational tournament held over the weekend. After a close 33-30 win over the host F.E. Madill Mustangs Friday night, the Panthers rebounded to chalk up two wins against the West Hill Raiders of Owen Sound and the Knights from Kincardine. South Huron coach Russ Watson said the win against Kincardine was especially gratifying because the Knights defeated the Panthers in a close championship game last year. Again the Panthers played their tight man-to- man defense keyed by strong games from Morgan Powe, Jami -Lyn Datars and Morgan Cooper. Alanna Horn played par- ticularly well on Friday night, while Erin Wells and Jenn Walker had strong games on Saturday. The offensive punch was provided by Brintnell with 29 points, Taelor Douglas with 26 and Taylor Bikes forAfrica EXETER — People in south- ern Africa will be more mobile thanks to donations from Huron County through a pro- ject to donate nearly 400 r mountain bikes to Namibia that is being organized by Jack and Sylvia Nonkes of Blyth.
