South Huron cross country runners headed to WOSSAA
By Ben Forrest
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER - Two South Huron District
High School (SHDHS) athletes have
advanced to this week's WOSSAA cross-
country meet on the strength of top -10
finishes at Huron -Perth.
Grade 9 student Sarah Irons finished
ninth among midget girls at Huron -Perth,
while Grade 11 student Claire Tuckey fin-
ished in a tie for 10th place in the senior
girls division.
The top 15 individuals in each division
advanced to WOSSAA, which will be held
Thursday at Wildwood Conservation area
near St. Marys.
Tuckey narrowly missed advancing to
WOSSAA last year, when she was a
junior, but worked hard to improve for
the 2008 season, according to coach Paul
Colbourne.
"She missed out on going last year by
two runners, so she worked really hard
all year," said Colbourne. "It was a good
story for her to make it this year."
Though Irons and Tuckey were perhaps
South Huron's standout performers,
Colbourne gave a nod to the rest of his
crew, who worked hard and improved
their times.
"Every runner that has been working
their butts off for the last month and a
half ... all of them improved their time
from the beginning of the year to the
end," he said. "I'm certainly proud that
they worked as hard as they did."
He noted that in meets prior to Huron -
Perth, South Huron athletes typically
placed in the top half of groups that fea-
tured as many as 170 runners.
Colbourn sees this success as a testa-
ment to the talent and work ethic of his
athletes.
"They've worked really hard this year,
and a lot of them have been really dedi-
cated," he said. "It certainly showed for
those individuals who came out for all the
practices and really worked hard - they
really did accomplish something."
Going into Huron -Perth, Colbourn saw
progress as the team's primary goal.
"We didn't really have enough runners
for any team events in the races, so our
goal was certainly to improve our time,"
he said.
"You always want to do that. You want
to do well, but if you can show that you're
getting better all the time ... who knows,
if the season went on a little longer how
much better they could have done."
For Irons and Tuckey, training will con-
tinue right up until the day before WOS-
SAA, according to Colbourne.
"You don't want to strain anything the
night before, but your body responds to
how much you work out, and so a run
keeps your body moving," he said.
"It's good to do exercises, to do some-
thing active the day before the race as
long as it's mild. Taking days off some-
times puts you back a little bit."
At WOSSAA, which will feature the best
high school cross-country runners in
Western Ontario, Colbourn is hoping for
top -25 finishes for both Irons and Tuckey
- something he sees as a "very
respectable place to be," and quite feasi-
ble for both runners.
"I don't see a problem with either of the
girls accomplishing that," he said, though,
"Anything above that would be spectacu-
lar."
Colbourn reiterated his satisfaction at
seeing not only two athletes qualify for
WOSSAA, but improvement from the
team as a whole.
"It's not all about how fast you are, but
there's a lot of dedication, and you can
see it," he said.
He hopes that his athletes will see their
progress and use it as motivation to
improve for next season.
"I think Claire's a good example of
that," he said. "The competition moved
up with her, so certainly there are people
that she lost to last year that she
improved on and won this year.
"Dedication will improve, and I saw that
with the entire team this year."

The Sabres came out of the gate with one
thing in mind score lots of goals and
that's what they did. Micheal Boyle had a
hat trick and we had four other players
score two goals each. The defense limited
the amount of shots on our net. We had
Justin Goodwin in goal for us and he
made some great saves to limit Belmont
to only one goal. Great work team!! Next
up Mt. Brydges.
