LUCAN - With a
new and younger
lineup, the Lucan-
Ilderton Jets started
their new season
Friday night in
Clinton and came up
just short in overtime
by a 4-3 score.
The Jets rebounded
Saturday night with
their home opener
against Goderich by
defeating the Pirates
10-3.
Jets general man-
ager Rob Andrews
said the team decid-
ed to go for a differ-
ent style this year
with more speed
instead of size.
"We think we've
found it," said
Andrews.
The Jets took a 3-0
lead against Clinton
but the Radars came
back in the third
period to tie before
winning it three min-
utes into overtime.
Despite the loss,
Andrews said he is
pleased with three
out of four points
over the weekend.
Lucan-Ilderton
won't be back in
Lucan until late
November with a
string of road games
as well as a game
scheduled for
Ilderton Nov. 22.
"I like the look of
the team and so do
the coaches," said
Andrews.
The Jets are in
Monkton Friday at
8:30 p.m. and visit
Milverton on
Saturday, also at
8:30 p.m.

Lucan Irish gunning for top spot in conference this season
By Ben Forrest
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
LUCAN - The Lucan Irish sat within striking distance
of first place in the Southern Ontario Junior Hockey
League's Yeck Conference Monday - two points back of
front -running North Middlesex and one shy of second -
place Mt. Brydges.
Lucan is gunning for that top spot, and coach Russ
Morningstar thinks his squad is capable of winning the
division.
"I think we have a good shot at it," he said. "In saying
that, there's also two other teams in Parkhill [North
Middlesex] and Mt. Brydges that are going to put you
through your paces on a daily basis.
"If you take a night off, it's going to haunt you. The two
points that you lose out on today could have big effects
come February."
Lucan was tested Saturday against North Middlesex,
losing 4-3 in a shootout.
North Middlesex struck first in the game, thanks to a
power play goal by Alex Avery. Lucan answered back
late in the first period with a power play goal of its own,
courtesy of Kevin Dean.
Dean put Lucan ahead at 2:16 in the second period,
with assists from Tyler Medd and Zack Yeo.
North Middlesex struck back with consecutive goals in
the third, however, before Lucan's Dustin McTaggart
evened the score at the 12 -minute mark.
Overtime settled nothing, and Lucan failed to convert
during a four -player shootout. North Middlesex scored
twice.
Morningstar felt both teams played sluggishly, and that
neither played overly well.
"Both teams were pretty evenly matched," he said. "I
thought we played OK at times, and then at other times I
thought we played pretty poorly, so it was a mixed bag of
hammers."

The Irish played well in patches, Morningstar said, and
a lack of focus might have contributed to their sluggish
play.
"I think we had our minds on something other than
hockey to begin the game with," he said.
"The biggest thing is just to remember that we have 60
minutes ... We just need to come out and compete for 60
and put full games together in order to be successful on
a regular basis."
Lucan fared better on Oct. 15 against the Exeter, win-
ning 5-2. Exeter opened the scoring with a power play
goal from Shayne Mudge but tied it up two minutes later
with a goal from Adam Hartman.
Lucan's Jeff Boyd put the Irish ahead shortly after that,
and Exeter's Kenney Allen evened the score shortly after
the 11 -minute mark.
Hartman put the Irish ahead for good in the second
period, and Tyler Medd and Zack Yeo contributed the
remaining goals.
"I thought we played one of our better games against
Exeter," said Morningstar.
"It was more of a complete game. Our biggest problem
is the guys like to try and get out of the system and run
and gun a little bit and start floating. I thought we put
together our closest game to 60 minutes against them."
Morningstar acknowledged Exeter's strong play in the
first period, but noted that adjustments made by the
Irish helped them improve in the game's second and
third frames.
"I think we kind of settled down and got our bodies in
the shooting lane and tried to force Exeter to move it
elsewhere," he said. "So I think we made just those
slight adjustments in our play."
Lucan's next match will be Saturday at Mt. Brydges, a
team Morningstar anticipates will be neck and neck with
Lucan and North Middlesex this season.
Morningstar claims not to be worried about what other
teams are doing in the season to date.
"Until we can get our game down to being disciplined
and our systems working and power plays and that, we
just concentrate on what we need to correct and where
we need to be focussed on, and we'll take it from there,"
he said.
