Flaro, who was in his first season as the Hawks' head coach, told the Times - Advocate last week he decided to step down because there was "too much interference" from an assistant coach. "I was supposed to have the head coaching job and it was far from being that," he said. Hawks president Phil Potter framed Flaro's resignation differently, saying "Recent personal developments have drawn Hal's focus away from the team, making it difficult for him to continue his commitment to the team." Potter would not identify what the alleged "personal developments" were, but said in a written statement that, "We wish Hal and his family a speedy recov- ery." Flaro declined to comment on Potter's statement, but made clear that the team's struggles early this season did not factor into his decision to leave. "The kids are good," he said. "I enjoyed them. They're a good bunch of young men and I think they're doing well, and I think they're going to do well." Asked what is next for him, Flaro said he plans to relax. "I think it's about time," he said. "I played hockey 67 years and I had a lot of experience at that, and I had a lot of enjoyment and fun out of it. Hal Flaro Pool scores "I think right now I'm going to spend most of the time with my family." Potter said the Hawks have actively started recruiting for a new head coach, and hope to have the position filled short- ly. Pearce will be handling bench duties in the interim New beginnings As Jamie Pearce surveyed his team after a 3-2 loss to Mt. Brydges on Saturday, he saw something he claims was absent for some time. "Guys were very upset that we lost, and that's not something I had seen from this team in the last two years," he said. The game was hard- fought, and Exeter was ahead by one goal heading into the third Jamie Pearce period. Exeter's Blair Parson opened the scor- ing at 2:45 in the first period, with assists from Jake Jeffrey and Shane Mudge. Mt. Brydges did not answer back until the second frame, when Dan Taylor notched a power play goat Exeter's Brandon Dymond put the Hawks back in front five minutes later, giving his squad a 2-1 lead heading into the final frame. Early in the third period, however, Mt. Bryges' Brad Cooper tied the game on an unassisted, shorthanded goal. Mt. Brydges player Justin DeVries iced the victory at the 18 -minute mark. Earlier that week, Exeter had decisively beaten Lambeth at home (5-3) and lost an away game to the Lucan Irish (5-2).
