If you have not called for owls in the moonlight, here is your chance. The annual Owl Prowl takes place Nov. 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) adminis- tration centre workshop at Morrison Dam Conservation Area. Admission is free but donations are welcome in support of ABCA conser- vation education programs. Families come out each year to fmd out about owls and learn how they adapt as night-time hunters, according to organizers. "Owls are fascinating nocturnal birds of prey, which have many unique adapta- tions," said Julie Hicks, conservation edu- cation specialist for the ABCA. After a slide show, participants go on a guided night hike to call in owls. "Eastern Screech Owls, one of 10 different owl species found in Ontario, often respond to record- ed calls that will be played on the hike," said Hicks. Following the hike, fill your mug with complimentary hot chocolate and enjoy drinking it around an outdoor fireplace. Bring your own mug to cut down waste created from using disposable cups. Hikers and prowlers are reminded to dress appropriately for being outdoors. A clear, cool night in 2007 proved to be an excellent evening to go owl prowling and more than 150 people came out to enjoy Morrison Dam Conservation Area in the dark. "The Owl Prowl was a huge success with a great turn -out," said Hicks. "Last year we were able to hear the calls of two Eastern Screech Owls." Please call to register yourself and family members. If rain is imminent on Nov. 8, check out the ABCA website for updates at abca. on. ca To register, or for more information, contact Hicks at 235-2610 or toll-free 1- 888-286-2610.
