Training exercise aimed at emergency preparedness
Training exercise – The Exeter Fire Department took part in a
vehicle extrication training exercise on Oct. 16 at a farmhouse on
Highway 4.The exercise simulated what would happen if firefighters
responded to a car that had collided with a house.Various firefight-
ers are seen here during the exercise. (Photos/Ben Forrest)
EXETER — Car -on -building
crashes are perhaps not an
everyday occurrence, but they
are not altogether uncommon,
according to Exeter Fire
Department Captain Jeff Musser.
If such an incident takes place
in the near future, Exeter fire-
fighters are likely now better
prepared for it.
Musser was among the orga-
nizers of a vehicular extrication
training exercise carried out at
Highway 4 farmhouse on Oct. 16.
Exeter firefighters had been
told they would be involved in
some such activity, but were not
told what exactly they would be
responding to.
When they arrived at the house
shortly after dusk, firefighters
found the back end of a car pro-
truding from a hole in the build-
ing, with a fire burning in the
building's kitchen.
Two live teenagers, playing the
part of victims, were sitting in a
car, and a dummy representing a
deceased person was located
beneath the car.
The firefighters participating
were asked to put out the fire,
then rescue the "victims," and
remove the "body."
The victims were removed
from the car in roughly half an
hour, and removed from the
building through a front window.
Musser said he considered the
exercise a success, adding that
the group's extrication was for
the most part a textbook effort.
The department will review the
exercise, and discuss how things
could have been done better.
Musser expressed his gratitude
to Bill and Fern Dougall for
allowing the fire department to
use the farm house, and noted
that Exeter Collision provided the
vehicle for the exercise.
The hole in the building was
created with a backhoe, and the
backhoe was used to put the car
in place.
An evaluation of the exercise
will be completed, and used to
improve any weaknesses identi-
fied.

JENISH HOUSE DESIGN LIMITED
Plan number 5-3-661 OUT OF THE ORDINARY FAMILY HOME - A covered walkway that will shelter visitors and
family members alike is one of the thoughtful touches that sets this three-bedroom family home apart from he ordi-
nary. Another is a bonus room that not only adds more than 350 square feet to the home's living area, but wil provide
space for a playroom, studio, media room or quiet retreat. Separated from the foyer by an archway and half -wall,
the open-plan great -room complex includes a gas fireplace. The fireplace is angled so that its cosy glow will warm
every corner of the area, including the kitchen and dining room, where an optional built -out buffet will expand storage
space. The kitchen is separated from the dining and living rooms by an island with a raised eating bar, so the cook will
never feel isolated. A large corner pantry offers always -welcome storage space. A partly covered terrace is accessible
from the dining room and will encourage al fresco dining during the warmer months. The master suite features a bay
window with an extra -deep sill that overlooks the back garden for privacy. There is a three-piece ensuite, as well as a
spacious walk-in closet. The second bedroom adjoins a three-piece bathroom and enjoys a view to the side garden,
while the third bedroom looks out to the front veranda. The laundry room, located between the foyer and the stairway
to the bonus room, includes access to the double garage, so it can double as a mudroom. A coat closet near the
entrance foyer and a linen closet near the second bathroom complete the lay -out. Exterior finishes include stone pil-
lars that draw attention to the covered walkway and veranda, as well as vertical siding and painted trim. Decorative
woodwork embellishes the apexes of the shingled gables. This home measures 39 feet wide and 60 feet, six inches
deep, for a total of 1,728 square feet of living space.
