SHDHS starts new ping -gong club
T.J. Zielman
TIMES—ADVOCATE CO-OP STUDENT
EXETER — South Huron District High School is
starting a new ping-pong club for students of any
type of skill or activeness.
The school has changed its schedule to accom-
modate extra -curricular activities after class. The
ping-pong club has been created for students to
have fun, be active and improve hand -eye co-
ordination.
The ping-pong club was created by teacher
Chuck Mallette and organized with the help of
Phil Conley and former teacher Bob Robilliard.
Mallette saw an opportunity for the club to be
created last year during the 30 -hour famine. He
said, "Last year during the 30 -hour famine, I
brought in my ping-pong tables for the students
and the students were constantly playing ping-
pong all the time and that said to me there is
some interest in ping-pong."
Last year, former principal Jeff Reaburn took
Mallette's thought into account and bought the
tables and equipment, hoping for a good turnout.
This year the ping-pong club has been a great
success. So far there has been an estimated 25-30
students show up regularly on Thursdays and it
has been such a success that the club will possi-
bly rum on Wednesdays after school.
The club has remained competitive and wins
and losses for each student are recorded that will
eventually determine the format of the playoffs
that occur towards the end of the year.
Tournaments will also be held throughout the
year and at the cost of $1 per game, students will
compete against each other and possibly for a
trophy. The money raised will be put back into
the club for tables, paddles and balls.

Panthers pick up two
field hockey victories
EXETER - The South Huron
field hockey Panthers travelled to
Mitchell on Oct. 16 for two make
up games.
In the first game
against Listowel, they
took control from the
starting whistle and
did not look back.
After 14 minutes,
Emily Lacasse
scored the first.
Nine minutes
later, two mid-
field players
linked up
with some
exciting
play and Karly
Bryson scored on a
pass from Keri Reschke.
The score at half time was 2-0
for South Huron and half way
into the second half, Bryson
again netted, with Sandra
Gregus providing the assist.
Gregus was on the setup again
as she worked hard to play the
ball to Staci Miller to bring the
total to 4-0. The Panthers were
continuously parked in the
Listowel end of the field and
racked up a total of twenty four
penalty corners. Taryn Anstett
earned the shutout in net.
Rookies got in some valuable
time to improve their game.
In the second game, Mitchell
provided the opposition on a less
than perfect pitch, where the
grass was very long and the sur-
face uneven.
The Panthers again were the
stronger team even though
they played a little flat,
according to
coach Jim
Workman.
Miller scored
on a Gregus
pass half way
into the first peri-
od. The score at
the half was 1-0 for
the Panthers and
Lacasse added a sec-
ond near the end of
the game with Reschke
providing the feed to
bring the final score to 2-
0 for South Huron.
This was not the prettiest
game, Workman said, but under
the circumstances was a good
score.
This was again a game domi-
nated by the South Huron mid-
field and forward line, but the
defensive unit of Marlee
Heywood, Alanah Hodgert and
Ashley Renning withstood any
challenge that the Mitchell team
mounted. Anstett again recorded
the shutout in net.
