Donating her long locks
Helping others — Six-year-old Kiana Kirk of Exeter, above
and right, recently had her long locks chopped off at First
Choice Haircutters. Kiana, a Grade 2 student at Exeter
Public, decided to donate her hair to the Canadian Cancer
Society, where it will be used for wigs for children undergoing
cancer treatments. At right Kiana and hairstylist Lynette
Schnarr show off the 20 inches of hair Kiana had cut off. (pho-

Local libraries celebrating
EXETER — The Huron
County Library system is cele-
brating longtime anniversaries
of two local branches.
The Exeter branch is cele-
brating 130 years, while the
Kirkton branch is 95 years old.
Celebratory teas will be held
this Saturday (Kirkton, 10-11
a.m., and Exeter, 2-4 p.m.) to
mark the occasion.
According to "Huron County
Library History: 50 Years of
Service," by M. Sloan and
Nisa Howe, the earliest
library in Exeter
began in 1878 in
Taman's Store at
401 Main St. Ten
years later the
library was in the
two lower rooms
of Exeter Town
Hall, where it remained
until the Carnegie Library was
built in 1915. When the
Carnegie building was demol-
ished in September 2000, the
library temporarily moved to
the former Canadian Tire
building on Main Street, where
it remained until the new
library opened at the corner of
Main and Sanders Nov. 4,
2002.
The Exeter Library started
as a "Mechanic's Institute,"
which originated in Great
Britain with men's societies.
As such, when the library
opened in 1878, it carried edu-
cational materials and books
in the Mechanic's Institute.
One hundred thirty-five
years later, the library now
offers fiction and non-fiction
for adults and young children;
large print books; magazines
and newspapers; Dutch lan-
guage books; music on CDs;
books on cassette, CDs and
MP3s; videos and DVDs; news-
papers on microfilm; electron-
ic resources; free computer
use; computer programs for
young children; and
board games. The
library also offers
programs such as
"Toddlertime," and
youth and adult
book clubs as well
as Internet training,
Nintendo Wii
games and delivery
to Exeter Villa.
In Kirkton, the library was
started in 1913 by the
Women's Institute with a
donation of $75.18.It's
unknown where the library
was located when it first
opened, although in the 1920s
it was located on the former
Switzer property. In 1941, the
Kirkton Library joined the
Huron County Library
Association and in 1946 the
library received a grant to
expand.
In 1973, the Kirkton Library
moved to its current location
in the Kirkton-Woodham
Community Centre.

PET ADOPTION BULLETIN
Huron OSPCA (Ontario Humane Society)
If you have a Frisbee or like to go for a walks, I would like
to meet you. My name is Todd and I am a 6 -year-old
small Cattle Dog Whippet cross. I love to be busy and
play. My foster Mom says I am very smart because I
know how to sit, shake a paw and I even give kisses. My
ideal match would be an active person who needs a
good friend like me, or a family with older kids who are
I active and a lot of fun. I like to be busy and on the go,
and would need a fenced yard, where I could wait for
you. If you are the family I am looking for please call the
shelter. I would love to meet you. Sincerely, Todd.
