October, November and December are peak times when deer and other types of wild animals venture out onto highways as this is their mating and migration season. Last year, during that three-month period, 103 collisions occurred in Lambton involving deer. The entire year totaled 173. Peak times for colli- sions are 5 - 7 a.m. and 5 - 11 p.m., although an encounter may occur at any time. Deer are usually found migrating across roadways near rural, wooded areas. Don't assume that will be the only area you encounter these animals A deer was actually found in downtown Petrolia just last fall. The OPP are recommending motorists "watch -steer -brake and stop" to prevent getting injured or killed during an encounter with any wildlife on the roadways. • Watch the road ahead by scanning from shoulder to shoulder; • Watch for yellow wildlife warning signs — slow down in these areas; • Use high beams and watch for glowing eyes of animals; • If you see glowing eyes — expect that other animals are nearby; • Steer in control — never swerve to avoid hitting an ani- mal; • Brake firmly but don't lock up your wheels — slowing will provide you with control; • Stop ... safely — remem- ber other animals may follow; • Remember to stay in con- trol if hitting an animal is unavoidable.
