HURON -PERTH — The Huron Perth
Children's Aid Society is asking community
members and
partner
agencies to
wear a pur-
ple ribbon
during
October to
show their support for ending child abuse and
neglect.
Last year, more than 27,000 children and
youths under 16 received services from
Ontario's Children's Aid Societies for protection
from suspected child abuse and neglect.
In Huron Perth last year the Huron Perth
Children's Aid Society:
• Received 1,440 reports of child abuse;
• Conducted 1,080 investigations;
• Provided ongoing service to 602 families;
• Served 400 children in residential care;
• Sponsored over 600 economically disadvan-
taged children to attend summer camp pro-
grams and community recreational programs;
• Provided toys, clothes and food to 531 eco-
nomically disadvantaged families including
1,166 children to help brighten their Christmas;
• Worked closely with other community ser-
vice providers like family services agencies,
schools, day cares, police, shelters and health
care providers in helping families.
Child abuse is a serious concern for all
Ontarians because many children are at risk of
abuse or suffering from lack of proper care.
Everyone has an ongoing duty
to report abuse when they see
or hear that a child is suffering
from any form of abuse from a
parent, caregiver or adult
whether physical, emotional,
sexual or neglect.
Please wear a purple ribbon to
show your support.
The Huron -Perth Children's
Aid Society is mandated by the
Child and Family Services Act to
promote the best interests, pro-
tection, and well-being of chil-
dren in Huron and Perth coun-
ties, and operates under the
oversight of the Ministry of
Children and Youth Services.

Pink Day —The hallways at South Huron
District High School last week had a distinct
"pink" theme, as half the school participated in
"Pink Day," which saw $537.4 1 raised for cancer
research.The school sold pink ribbons as a
fundraiser and had a "guess the number of M&Ms
in a jar" contest, won by Miss McCowan. Miss
Brintnell won the "Most Pink Person" contest.

Capsule Comments
by Ernie Miatello
A natural method of treating nausea could be
using capsules containing ginger. They usually
come in 500 mg capsules and a dose of one
or two capsules every four hours is sometimes
helpful. If used for motion -sickness the dose should be
taken about 2 hours before traveling.
There has been much in the news about the efficacy and
side effects of antidepressant medications. These drugs are
effective in the appropriate patients. Many, many people
benefit from using these medication. If you are taking them,
do not stop them without talking to your doctor.
If you think of yourself as a "light smoker"... Only 1-4
cigarettes a day, you are still at risk to die more from isch-
emic heart disease than a non-smoker. Lung cancer is still a
much higher risk also. Recommendation? Quit altogether.
A good way to look upon vaccination is that it teaches
the immune system to defend itself from disease. Immuniza-
tion has saved millions of lives and has prevented so much
suffering and disability since the concept was first discov-
ered by Edward Jenner back in 1796 for the treatment of
smallpox.
