Huron takes part inWorld Food Day
HURON — "It may be surprising to
some, but there are people in Huron
County who go hungry because they
can't afford healthy food."

in Huron County.
Dunbar has organized a food drive
as part of World Food Day on
Thursday. County of Huron employ-
ees are being asked to bring in non-
perishable food for donation to local
food banks. Community members are
also encouraged to make donations.
Dunbar says many people use the
nine food banks in Huron County.
Almost 7,000 families or individuals
used the food banks in 2005, the last
time information was collected.
"Four per cent of Huron County res-
idents don't have access to healthy
food. It might be because of rising
grocery costs or the lack of trans-
portation to grocery stores or food
banks. Some people might also go
without because of the stigma in
small towns of using a food bank."
Huron County Warden John Bezaire
is pleased the county is taking part in
World Food Day. "Huron County is a
great place to live but we also need to
recognize any level of poverty is unac-
ceptable. This is an opportunity to
raise awareness that everyone has a
role to play in addressing poverty
issues."

World Food Day was started in 1945
by a group from the United Nations. It
is recognized in 150 countries.

Electronics stolen in break-in
GRAND BEND — Sometime between Sept. 14 and Oct. 4 Lambton OPP
report that thieves broke into a seasonal cottage on Elmwood Ave. in Grand
Bend.
Entry was gained, by smashing the window in an exterior door. Once inside,
the thieves stole a 26 -inch Samsung television and an RCA six -disc CD player.
The value of the items stolen is estimated at close to $800. Damage to the cot-
tage is estimated at an additional $200.
There are no suspects.
Cottage owners are asked to take precaution against being victimized. When
closing the cottage at the end of the season, remove all items of value includ-
ing electronics and alcohol.
SHDHS busy with events
Well, life continues pretty much as usual at
South Huron. As the weather changes so do the
sports.
The hockey teams, I believe, are beginning to be
assembled. On Monday of last week students
involved in the Stratford Shakespeare Players'
Festival began rehearsing a one act version of "A
Midsummer Night's Dream," which they will per-
form in November.
Wednesday was Pink Day and an impressive
number of students and staff remembered to
wear pink and help support breast cancer
research.
Friday was a fairly busy day at South Huron,
both during and after school. In the morning we had our annual
awards assembly to recognize top students, honour roll students
and top subject award winners. Friday evening was
Commencement and it went very well. It was great to see the
graduates again and find out what everyone has been up to since
last year. The night went very well and the graduating class made
an excellent choice selecting Marcus Haccius as their
Valedictorian.
I was also glad to see that Mr. Reaburn was able to see the
grads off. My favourite part of the evening was the tradition of the
music graduates rejoining the senior band to play a Music room
favourite — the "Blues Brothers Review."
Interim reports will be sent out this week and parent teacher
interviews will be the following week. Next week is also
Agricultural Week and Tuesday is Ring Day.
This past week was great but they're always long when leading
up to a holiday weekend and I hope everyone enjoyed theirs.

William and Lorraine Hewlett;

daughter of Ryan and Kelly
(Waters) Hewlett.
Fred Walden lit the Christ
Candle. The scripture readings
were from Matthew 22 and
Phillippians 4 The message was
entitled "It's all worth it!"
The annual beef dinner will be
held at the Kirkton-Woodham
Community Centre on Nov. 2
from 4:30 to 7 p.m., sponsored
by Granton -Wesley Church.

Tuesday evening, Oct. 7, with 15
members present. President
Elizabeth Garrett-Eedy wel-
comed everyone and read a
Thanksgiving poem. Lillus
Riddell -Lewis and Marguerite
Garrett presented the program
with a Thanksgiving theme and
the need to thank God. Some
suggestions were sending a
thank -you note to someone who
helped you in the past, showing
gratitude daily to God and giving
thanks to someone today. Lillus
read a poem, Make Every Day
Thanksgiving, and a reading on
why to go to church, followed by
prayer.
Elizabeth led the business
when plans were discussed for
the beef supper at the K -W
Community Centre on Sunday,
Nov. 2. Elizabeth closed the
meeting with prayer, prior to
refreshments served by Lillus
and Marguerite.
St. Paul's Anglican
On Thanksgiving Sun., Oct. 12
at St. Paul's Anglican Church in
Kirkton, Rev. Dalice Sim led the
service of morning prayer. The
message was about choosing a
righteous life with justice and
peace for all. John Urquhart
read the lessons.
Happy 90th birthday to Peggy
Paul on Oct. 15.

THE FOLLOWING RECIPE FOR SLOPPY JOES WAS ONE I COULD
MAKE WITH STUFF ON HAND WHEN I COULDN'T GET OUT
TO THE STORE. IT IS EASY, FAST TO PREPARE AND GREAT
TASTING. ENJOY
1 Ib ground beef
1 cup chopped onion
Salt and pepper to taste
1 TBSPWorcestershire sauce
I can tomato soup
1/3 can water
Brown beef and add onion and cook till limp. Season and
then add remaining ingredients. Heat through and simmer for
10 minutes. Serve open faced on hamburg buns.
