The MPs were speaking to teacher Dave MacLeod and Tracy Mclellan's civics class and Van Loan was referring to the advan- tages he has had compared to his family, who lived in Estonia dur- ing the Second World War. Van Loan and Lobb were speaking at the invitation of MacLeod, who said all the Huron -Bruce candidates were invited to attend. Van Loan said several of his family were killed or imprisoned in concentration camps by the Soviets before his grandparents first emigrated to Sweden and then chose to come to Canada because of the opportunities. The experiences of his family, said Van Loan, taught him about the fragile nature of democracy and how it has to be protected. Van Loan said his political career started when he volunteered at age 12, something his mother and grandmother didn't want him to do, which he realized was because of their fear of political member- ship lists used by the communists in Estonia against their oppo- nents. In his job as government house leader, Van Loan said he gets to sit in for the prime minister when he isn't in the House of Commons and described the job as "the lawyers of the House of Commons," who make arguments to the speaker and negotiate with each other. Van Loan said the job is high stress but fun and something few people get to do. He added that Canada is the only country in the word that has a question period every day, although Britain has one a couple of times a week.
