CLASSIFI,. CLASSIFIED CLASSIFIF
South Huron holds commencement exercises Fri., Oct. 10
EXETER — Greetings from South Huron District High
School. My name is Kevin Mills and I am the new prin-
cipal of this school.
I have personally enjoyed my first month at this
school. Periodically, it is my intent to inform the
public of news and events at South Huron
District High School by submitting a column to
the media. I also encourage all parents to access
the school's web blog at www.shdhs.ca to
acquire the most recent school information.
Three new initiatives are taking place at South
Huron District High School, all of which affect
the culture of the school.
Lunch Incentive
The structure of the school day has been
altered slightly this year. Specifically, three
periods during the day are 70 minutes in length
and the period before lunch can run anywhere
between 70 and 90 minutes per day at the
teacher's discretion. Courses still tumble from period to
period throughout the week. If students complete their
seat work/homework at an appropriate academic level,
the teacher has the discretion of dismissing students 20
minutes earlier during period two. As a result, the
lunch period can be extended for 20 minutes to 65
minutes in length. Teachers also have the option of
keeping small groups of students or individuals back at
this time to provide extra assistance.
Activity Period
At the end of the school day, students have the option
of participating in an activity period (40 minutes). The
purpose of the activity period is to build school morale
through student involvement in clubs and athletics.
During the month of September, more than 30 teams
and clubs were available for students to participate in.
Some clubs run daily, others run weekly or
monthly.
One club I find interesting is the "Volunteer
Club," organized by Mr. Watson. Students par-
ticipating in this club perform volunteer func-
tions for the school outside of class time (i.e.
score keep at events).
The time spent on these activities counts
towards earning 40 hours of community ser-
vice, an Ontario Secondary School Diploma
requirement. It should come as no surprise
that students who are more involved with
their school are generally more successful in
school. Parents, please encourage your kids to
get involved!
In future columns I hope to highlight other clubs that
continue to operate at the school.
High Skills Majors
South Huron District High School is offering and
organizing two Specialist High Skills Major Programs
this year for the first time. Transportation as well as
Arts and Culture are the two curricular areas where
students can choose to concentrate their areas of study
at the Grade 11 and 12 levels. In addition to earning
specific credits at these grade levels, students must
also complete a package of industry -standard certifica-
tions. Students also must earn co-operative education

New exhibit at museum
GODERICH —
"Through the Voices
of Beads," a new
exhibit celebrating
native culture, will
be on display at the
Huron County
Museum from Oct. 4
to Nov. 23.
One of the goals of
the exhibition from
the Royal Ontario
Museum is to reveal
the meanings
expressed in
Iroquois beadwork,
meanings that
remain embedded in
Iroquois culture to
this day.
The Iroquois origi-
nally adorned their
animal -skin clothing
with porcupine quill.
When they began
trading with
Europeans, they
transferred their
skills to cloth and
threaded beads.
Yet they retained
the same imagery
they had always
used, imagery that
represented their
beliefs, values, and
legends.
Bead workers have
played a vital role in
preserving Iroquois
beliefs over the cen-
turies.
A second goal is to
show that this art,
like the Iroquois
people themselves,
still thrives.
The exhibition
consists of about 20
pieces from ROM
collections, both his-
torical and contem-
porary, and about
10 works from the
collection of
Iroquois beadwork
artist Samuel
Thomas.
Several of the lat-
ter, including two
complete outfits, are
unusual in that they
were created in a
collaborative effort
by several teams of
people across
Ontario, both
Aboriginal and non -
Aboriginal, working
under Thomas's
guidance.
Most of them had
no previous experi-
ence in bead work-
ing. The intent of
the project was to
demonstrate that
traditional Iroquois
teachings can be of
great value to the
modern world.
These teachings
include love, com-
passion, a good
mind and the ability
to work together
with others as one.
credits in this program.
Students who complete all facets of this program will
graduate with a "red seal." The Ministry of Education
anticipates that post -secondary institutions as well as
organizations offering apprenticeship will recognize
this designation. Students will be exposed to these
pathways as the school year progresses. Please have
your son/daughter see Student Services for more infor-
mation if interested.
School Council
School Council meets the third Monday of every
month. September's meeting was sparsely attended.
The school council chairperson position is still avail-
able! School Council performs an important service in
our community. Information is shared and advice is
given on educational matters. Please attend our next
meeting Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. in the school library.
Progress Reports
Progress reports will be mailed to parents Oct. 16.
After reading the report, please contact the school with
any concerns and ask for Student Services or
Administration. Also, a reminder that our Parent-
Teacher Night will take place Oct. 23. Parents may see
teachers between 3 and 4 p.m. as well as between 5:30
and 7:30 p.m.
Commencement
South Huron is holding its annual commencement
exercises on Friday, starting at 7:30 p.m. at the school.
We hope as many graduates and their families can
attend as possible.
Buster gets blessed — Pat O'Connor of Clandeboye and his pal "Buster Brown" attended
the `Festival Eucharist and Blessing of the Animals' Sunday at St. Paul's Cathedral in London.
Buster was described as well-behaved during the 45 -minute service, with "no mishaps."
