Dow and his son Gib Jr. own the 100 -acre course which expanded from nine to 18 holes in 1991. The Dows said they didn't know the course was being evaluated. "We're all recreational golfers," said Gib Sr. "There is nothing worse than being frustrated on your day off." He adds that difficult courses make longer rounds and Ironwood tries to keep rounds to four or four and a half hours. Ironwood director of golf Karen Pfaff said the course is in impeccable condition because of the efforts of Gib Sr. every day over the past 40 years. Pfaff said "We're very surprised to get the rat- ing. It's a big honour since it's not just Canada." Pfaff was hired four years ago as the director of golf, a position which the course didn't have previously and the job has grown since she was Value recognized — From left, Holly, Gib Jr., Barb and Gib Dow Sr., along with Ironwood director of golf Barb Pfaff, recently celebrated the recognition of Ironwood Golf Course as one of the best course values in "Golf Digest" magazine. (photo/Pat Bolen) hired. Pfaff said she oversees the leagues and member services and added an Ironwood website two years ago. The Dows said the course draws much of its business from London and with an industry standard of a 45 -minute radius for customers, Ironwood is over the standard. They add that cus- tomers come not just for golf but also for the patio which is open to every- one, not just golfers. The course was award- ed the recognition not for anything in particular but for the overall pack- age it offers, which Gib Sr. said comes from being 40 years in busi- ness. Improvements that have been made recently at the course are paved pathways as well as all- weather carts equipped with GPS. When the course opened, Gib Sr. said golfers didn't play in bad weather but now they will play in the rain although not when it is cold. The course participates in several community fundraisers every year and yesterday (Tuesday) Ironwood saw its 100 holes of golf in a day for Parkinson's fundraiser. "Once they play here, they're hooked," said Gib Sr. "We build a relation- ship and they become friends." EXETER — The South Huron District High School Panthers junior girls basketball team split their doubleheader at Stratford Central Sept. 29. The Panthers won their opener against the host Rams 40-25 but lost to the St. Anne's Eagles 34-40. The Rams proved to be the Panthers' toughest league opponent yet, as the score read 20-12 at the half. Great hustle and opportunistic steals in the second half helped the Panthers pull away, especially in the fourth quarter. In their second game the Panthers found themselves locked in a seesaw battle with a vastly improved St. Annes' Eagles team. The Panthers appeared to be in con- trol at the half leading 22-16, but the Eagles reversed things in the second half outscoring the Panthers 24-13. In the fourth quarter the Eagles went on a six to nothing run from which the Panthers could not recover despite a valiant effort in which two of their starters fouled out. Panther's coach Russ Watson said it was a great day with lots of exciting, hard fought basketball played. The Panthers will take the lessons learned and apply them against league leading St. Mikes when they host the Warriors today (Wednesday).
