The Times Advocate, 2008-10-08, Page 7Wednesday, October 8, 2008 Times–Advocate 7 Communities in Bloom Over the next eight weeks you will be reading about the findings of the judges who visited Exeter. Our Community was judged on eight categories and we will write about one each week. The first category is Tidiness- of green spaces, medians, boulevards, sidewalks, streets, ditches, road shoul- ders, signage, vacant lots and buildings, with regards to garbage, weeds, main- tenance and repair, dog droppings, notices/posters, graffiti and vandalism. The judges found the Town of Exeter to be neat and tidy. The public areas including the parks, trails and the land- fill site were litter free. Citizens and businesses take really good care of their properties. The garbage recepta- cles are well maintained and of a con- sistent design, black with the white squirrel image and are well distributed throughout the community. They were pleased with our "LITTER LIFTER" program that is sponsored by Tim Hortons. If our committee finds you picking up litter we will give you a coupon for coffee and a donut. The Judges were also pleased with our "FILL A DUMP TRUCK" that the public school students were involved with on Earth Day. The judges felt that we need to have recycling containers on our streets and public properties. We need to work to clean up graffiti as it happens. Purchasing signs and products that have graffiti resistant surfaces to make the clean up easier. The Community in Blooms committee is dedicated to the tidiness of our Town and in 2009 will be dedicated to the "Municipality of South Huron". (photo/Pat Bolen) Update from South Huron mayor SOUTH HURON — One of the cur- rent priorities of the Epidemiology Program of the Huron County Health Unit is to produce a Community Health Status Report. A Community Health Status Report is a comprehensive report that describes the health of a community using commonly accepted and vali- dated health indicators. In measuring and reporting health status, the health unit can compare our region with others and also compare our- selves over time to see if we are changing. The Health Unit can also plan program- ming and the allocation of resources where they are needed. The report is in draft stage and an update was given to give a hint at some of the problems within our county. A majority of Huron County residents are overweight or obese. The 2005 Canadian Community Health Survey revealed that 22.5 per cent of Huron County adults were cate- gorized as obese compared to 15.5 per cent of Ontarians. In the same survey 33.3 per Ken O ke cent of Huron County residents were classified as overweight. Overweight and obesity are impor- tant risk factors for the develop- ment of chronic health conditions such as Type II diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and certain cancers. Mortality and hospitalization rates due to motor vehicle acci- dents are significantly higher among both Huron County males and females when compared to the province. Motor vehicle accidents were the leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of seven and 44. This age group also experienced the highest rate of emergency room visits due to motor vehicle accidents. Some food and waterborne enteric dis- eases have a higher incidence rate in Huron County. Some of this is due to the handling of animals HELP REDUCE DEMAND FOR ELECTRICITY IN OUR COMMUNITY. REDUCE GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS.
