County responds
to plant closures
By Scott Nixon
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
GODERICH — While last week's announcement
of the closure of Goderich's Volvo plant was a
shock to many, Huron County is trying to keep a
positive outlook on the county's economic future.
The county held a press conference in Goderich
last Thursday to respond to the Volvo closure,
which will see 500 people lose their jobs. Warden
John Bezaire said he wanted to make sure the 500
families affected by the closure know the county
shares their sorrow and empathizes with them. He
said the county will work hard to find new oppor-
tunities for those employees.
Bezaire said it's important to note that the clo-
sure had nothing to do with Huron County. In fact,
he said, the plant is closing "despite" Huron
County, explaining that the closure was due to
global economics.
Bezaire said the county has made significant
investments into infrastructure.
Goderich Deputy Mayor John Grace said the clo-
sure of Volvo was a shock, but not a surprise. He
said the plant got caught in the "global slide," and
added the town will work with the company, the
employees and the federal and provincial levels of
government to ensure compensation to the
employees will be fair and respectful.
Bezaire said Huron has a diverse economy, with
great schools.
"We have the base and the foundation," he said.
South Huron Mayor Ken Oke said the closure is
bad news for the entire county, as were the South
Huron closures of Dunline and CanGro.

Communities in Bloom to expand
By Scott Nixon
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
SOUTH HURON — After
receiving three out of a pos-
sible five "blooms" at the
recent Communities in
Bloom convention in
Gravenhurst, the local
Exeter committee is looking
to expand its efforts to
include all of South Huron
in future Communities in
Bloom projects.
South Huron council
passed a motion Monday
night supporting that all of
South Huron be involved in
Communities in Bloom,
instead of just Exeter,
which was the case this
year.
Communities in Bloom
member Linda Tgahrt and
other members of the com-
mittee were on hand to
read a list of 20 recommen-
dations the committee has
for the municipality.
In addition for asking for
municipal support to
expand the program to all
of South Huron, other rec-
ommendations included:
• adding more recycling
containers in places such as
the MacNaughton Trail,
parks and the downtown
core to increase tidiness
and help the environment;
• that graffiti be removed
from municipal buildings as
quickly as possible;
• more public benches;
• continuing to promote
the zinnia as the municipal-
ity's flower;
• setting up a formal her-
itage committee to establish
heritage and architectural
bylaws;
• continuing to protect
and celebrate the white
squirrel and use it for mar-
keting purposes;

Imeson may plead
to lesser charges
GODERICH — Appearing in Goderich for
the second time in person, accused triple
murder suspect Jesse Imeson waived his
right to a preliminary hearing on Monday
on first-degree murder charges in the slay-
ings of South Huron farm couple Bill and
Helene Regier last summer.
Imeson is scheduled to appear in Goderich
court Oct. 27 on the Regier charges and the
additional charge that he killed Windsor
man Carlos Rivera.
Outside the courthouse, Imeson's lawyer
Don Crawford said his client may plead
guilty to a lesser charge than first-degree
murder in all three of the slayings.
