Clarence 519- 527-2281.(25-40*) Grand Send WI celebrate year of potato GRAND BEND - The Year of the Potato was celebrated at the September meeting of the Grand Bend Women's Institute. The toe tapping song by Stompin' Tom Connors, Bud the Spud was a great opening for the potato meeting. Guessing the weight of two potatoes and a potato peeling contest allowed the ladies to participate. Information sheets and recipe cards from the Ontario Potato Board of Ontario were read with interest. The potato is Ontario's largest fresh vegetable crop and the world's fourth-largest crop. In Ontario the average annual acreage is approximately 43,000 acres with a farm gate value of $80 million. There are over 500 different types of potatoes and they come in all kinds of different shapes, sizes and colours. Potatoes provide most of the nutrients we need each day. They are delicious and economical -- they are fat and cholesterol free, high in vitamin C and potassium and a great source of iron. Several sam- ples of potato products were distrib- uted. Everyone present received freshly dug potatoes. President Cass Lovie chaired the business meeting. Helen West read several humerous bloopers that roM have appeared in church ` bulletins. Laughter is the best medicine. An update on the flower court pressing course was given. A request to be involved with the Habitat for Humanity, Huron County was read. Samples of W. I. T-shirts were displayed and orders taken. The Grand Bend Women's Institute will entertain at the Blue Water Rest Home on Sept. 24 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. It was noted that our display "Reach For the Stars" at the Zurich Fair won first prize. The London Area Convention is Oct. 7 in Shedden and the rally is Oct. 6 at 9:30 a.m. at Belgrave. The Summer Farmers' Markets were successful. We will prepare for the Grand Bend Thanksgiving Market being held on Oct. 11. A col- lection of spring recipes will be for- warded to Headquarters before December. An invitation to the Octoberfest at the Grand Bend Adult Day Centre was read. SALES PAGE 20 Music groups have been contacted to entertain at the Farmers' Market. Jim Love and Friends from 8 to 10 a.m., L'Audrey from 10 a.m. to 12 noon and Devon Martene group from 12 to 2 p.m.. An interesting variety of crafts were collected from members. These crafts will be dis- played at the local library. The next meeting is Oct. 16 at noon. A tour of Twin Pines and a lunch will be on the agenda. A social time followed the meeting and several food items containing pota- toes were enjoyed. If you are interested in joining with us contact Cass at 238-2727 for more information. 760 Service Directory SORENSEN CUSTOM SQUARE BALING 3x3x? • LBX332 with knives • Large flotation tires & steering axles • Valmar 455 forage preservative applicator • Moisture tester • Competitive prices ANY TIME ERIK 519-636-7006 OR 519-237-3423 Municipal Corner THE MUNICIPALITY OF SOUTH HURON INVITES PROPOSALS For Renovations to Municipal office building - Treasury Department SH-08-FAC.Town-03 CLOSING DATE THURSDAY, OCTOBER 16 AT 12:00 NOON The Municipality of South Huron is requesting quotations on the construction of a Reception counter and access doors for the Building and Treasury departments, located at the Municipal offices at 322 Main Street in Exeter.
