This will be the eleventh time the organization has committed to bringing a safety program to area children. The Royal Canadian Legion, R.E. Pooley Branch 167 will pre- sent each student with a copy of the 144 page handbook, "Drug Safety", which is produced by Gateway Community Safety Net. The book is widely used to edu- cate and increase awareness of substance abuse. In addition to educating youth, the materials are also a valuable family resource. Children learn effective strategies to resist peer pressure tactics, while parents receive tips to help their children stay drug-free. Important resource contacts and informa- tion are contained inside, as well. Also included is an educational DVD that features animated characters, interactive games and quizzes. It connects to the Community Safety Net website, where children can enter online contests and win great prizes. A recent study revealed that drug use (particularly cocaine use) among youth has been steadily increasing over the past decade.
