EXETER — In his first
year in the position,
Exeter Hawks general
manager Jamie Pearce is
optimistic about the way
the team is shaping up
and coach Hal Flaro says
he was pleased with the
way the Hawks played
over the weekend in
Wingham.
The Hawks played their
first exhibition game
with a 5-3 loss in
Lambeth but Pearce said
the team meshed well
and will have a much dif-
ferent look than the team
last year.
The Hawks will have a
mostly rookie lineup
almost every game, says
Pearce and will have only
one overager after this
season.
Pearce said he is look-
ing at a three-year plan
to rebuild the Hawks and
the focus will be shoring
up the defence, which
had a goals against aver-
age of seven.
While scoring goals
wasn't a problem last
season says Pearce, the
team was allowing 50
shots a game.
Pearce will also be
behind the bench for the
games, saying he is a
hands on person, but the
two jobs are separate.
"My job is to get the
best team on ice," says
Pearce.
Flaro says the Hawks
beat Wingham 3-1 to
start the tournament and
despite being short play-
ers on Saturday, came up
just short against
Kincardine, with a 3-2
loss in what Flaro said
was an excellent effort.
The Hawks fmished the
weekend with a 5-3 loss
to Wingham.
Exeter opens its season
Friday night when it
hosts North Middlesex at
8:30 p.m. at the Rec
Centre.
