Hurricane Ike's remnants made its way to Exeter just in time for kickoff and wreaked havoc with the field and playing conditions. The visitors opened the scoring early as the Fury had a lot of difficulty clearing the ball from their end and the resulting turnover allowed the Gols striker an opening and he made no mistake by beating Fury keeper Shawn McFalls. The Fury had a couple of chances at the other end but could not finish the plays and it came back to haunt them when Gols added to their lead shortly afterward. As halftime neared, the warmer southerly wind and rain changed direction suddenly and became a cold northern gust which only added to the experience. Down 2-0 at half the Fury set out to get on the board early. Dylan Fidler made a nice play and fed Jason McFalls who was all alone at the top of the box but his one -timer was poorly played keeping the Fury off the scoresheet. The Gols keeper was sharp throughout the game even with the adverse elements. The goalie made several good saves and never gave up a rebound which was very impressive. Fury sweeper Chris Hern made several rush- es upfield in the second half in an attempt to spark his team but nothing seemed to click for the Fury on this night. Keeper McFalls made an excellent finger tip deflection as he dove to knock a low shot wide of the net. McFalls per- formed well between the pipes while splashing around in the puddles that engulfed his goal area. The visitors rounded out the scoring on a breakaway late in the second half to make the final 3-0 and hand the Fury its club record breaking tenth shutout of the season. The Fury play perhaps its final game ever Sept 24 at 8:30 p.m. in Exeter against the Scottish team from London. Jan -Steffen Freitag played his last game with the team as he now heads home to Germany. Jan was a strong player for the Fury in the handful of games he played with the team and he will be missed. "It was a crazy game tonight with the weath- er but both teams played in it and we couldn't get anything started which has been our prob- lem all year," team spokesman Jason McFalls stated. "Truthfully we haven't really gelled as a team this season and the results and stand- ings definitely reflect that," McFalls HAY'S IIJ ill] [1] :111 RECONDITIONING OPEN MON. - SAT.
