35th year for Bannockburn Hike
The nights are getting cooler, days
are shorter and leaves are starting to
change from shades of green into
brilliant variations of orange, yellow
and red. Autumn begins Sept. 22. It
is now time to get out and enjoy this
time of year, according to organizers
of the Bannockburn Fall Hike.
"This year is the 35th anniversary
of the Bannockburn Fall Hike," says
Denise Biega, conservation education
technician with the Ausable Bayfield
Conservation Authority (ABCA).
"It is the perfect place to see the
colours of fall."
This year's event will for the first
time have a scavenger hunt activity
for children, she said.
The ABCA invites you to
Bannockburn Conservation Area any
time between 1 and 3 p.m. Sun., Oct.
5, for the 35th Annual Bannockburn
Fall Hike. The former Bannockburn
Wildlife Area is located at 76249
Bannockburn Line, two kilometres
north of Huron County Road 3
between Varna and Brucefield.
ABCA staff will be on hand to
answer any nature questions. A self -
guided tour booklet will also be
available for those who like to
explore on their own. Also available
for the nature lover is a professional-
ly -narrated audio file. Free audio
CDs are available and the audio file
can also be downloaded from the
ABCA website at abca.on.ca
The guided audio tour interprets
13 points of interest throughout the
two kilometres of trails. The audio
file and new signs at Bannockburn
Conservation Area were developed
two years ago through a partnership
effort initiated by the Friends of the
Bayfield River called the Walk a Mile
Trail Information Project.
The interpretive points -of -interest
talk and digital audio player,
pedometers for step counting and
GPS units may be borrowed anytime
of the year from the ABCA
Administration Centre (RR 3 Exeter)
for use at Bannockburn Conservation
Area.
"Bannockburn is very rich in
species diversity, boasting six differ-
ent types of natural communities
including a wet meadow, river sys-
tems, old field,
marsh and for-
est," said Biega.
Participants
can help reduce
waste by bring-
ing their own
mugs to enjoy a
free drink of hot
apple cider.
Also help your-
self to a locally
grown apple.
Admission is
free but dona-
tions are wel-
come to support
conservation
education
efforts.

Cheesy Potatoes From
Around the Block
THERE IS SOMETHING SO SPECIAL ABOUT POTATOES BOUGHT
IN A BASKET AT THE ROAD THAT ARE SMALL, NEW AND
WHITE! THEY LOOK GOOD BEFORE WE EVEN COOK THEM!
THANK YOU TO THE FARMERS THAT BOTHER TO GROW AND
PICK THESE DELIGHTS. I CAN REMEMBER MY DAD GROWING
POTATOES AND US COUNTING THE BLOSSOMS IN EARLY
SUMMER AND THEN DIGGING UP THE `CACHE'. WE WERE
ALWAYS COUNTING OUR FIND TO DETERMINE THE BEST
PRODUCING POTATO PLANT!
AT OUR HOME WE LOVE TO DO A VARIETY OF THINGS WITH
POTATOES AND THE FOLLOWING RECIPE IS AN EASY WAY TO
STRETCH AND ENJOY THE NEW CROP!
Clean and boil small new potatoes to feed your family
When the potatoes are tender crisp drain them and hold
them hot till you are ready to add the following sauce.
3 tbsp. flour (we have a local flour mill just outside of London
where you can get a wonderful assortment of hard to soft
flours)
3 tbsp. butter
One small chopped onion
2 cups milk
I -2 cup cheddar cheese grated
Saute onion in melted butter and then add flour. Stir and add
in milk and let the sauce thicken some and then add the
cheese to melt. Pour over warm potatoes and enjoy! You can
season these with fresh parsley from your garden—use lots!

EXETER - The Sept. 9 meeting of
Precious Blood Catholic Women's League
was attended by 23 members.
The guest speaker was Kendra Craig
from Bio Connections, giving a very
informative talk about the impor-
tance of exercise for seniors.
Exercise for 25 to 60 minutes
three times a week will decrease
heart disease, increase the good
cholesterol, increase brain activity
and help jump start your day so you
will feel better. Kendra pointed out the
various activities that are available for
Exeter.
Barb Truchon opened the meeting with
the League prayer, followed by a prayer
service entitled, "Come Wisdom of God."
This is the year of St. Paul. We are
encouraged to study St. Paul's life and
teachings and pray for the Archdiocese of
Toronto in September and the
Archdiocese of Ottawa in October.
A thank you was received from
the Food Bank. The Life Chain
will be held in Stratford Oct. 5
T and Right to Life memberships
• will be collected in October.
Aggie Groenewegen was
thanked for her donation of bap-
tismal sashes she recently made.
The charity of the month is Habitat for
Humanity where a $200 donation will be
made for the house to be built in Exeter
in 2009. Everyone was encouraged to
keep saving grocery tapes. The door
prize was won by Nellie Mommersteeg.
The next meeting will be Oct. 14.
