Blue Water Rest Home to hold groundbreaking
ZURICH - A groundbreaking ceremony will be held at
the Blue Water Rest Home Friday at 10:30 a.m.
The ceremony marks the start of a $10.45 million pro-
ject to redevelop the home's long-term care resident
beds, services and amenity spaces.
In August 2007, then -Minister of Health and Long-
term Care George Smitherman announced that the
province will be redeveloping 35,000 long-term care
beds over the next 10 years.
The next month, Smitherman announced that the Blue
Water Rest Home would be the pilot project for provin-
cial long-term care redevelopment and the development
of further community support services to serve the area.
These additional services are being developed in con-
junction with the recent "Aging at Home" initiative from
the Ministry, aimed at supporting the elderly and dis-
abled in their own homes for as long as possible.
Chairperson of the board of directors Ron Heimrich
said, "The people of this area had the foresight to found
this home in 1965, and since then, the community,
administration and staff have continued to sustain and
improve upon their vision. We have always remembered
that those who live at Blue Water today are the people
who raised us and consequently are deserving of the
very best in care. For the last 43 years, the quality of
care delivered under sound management is a testimony
Protect your home from pests year-round
(NC) -Your home is likely your
largest and most valuable asset,
but even the smallest of pests can
threaten your property and jeop-
ardize the health of your family
According to the experts, pests
can enter your home in both the
warmer and cooler months.
Rodents are likely to come indoors
during the fall and winter - caus-
ing structural damage by chewing
through plaster, wood and electri-
cal wiring. Warmer weather pests,
including ants, cockroaches and
flies, can transmit disease -causing
bacteria including salmonella and
E. coli.
"No matter the season, pests
always look for food, water and
shelter," said Bill Melville, quality
assurance manager for Orkin/PCO
Services. "The optimal tempera-
tures in your home, along with
readily available food and water,
put the welcome mat out for
pests."
Fortunately there are proactive
steps homeowners can take to
prevent pests.
First, call a pest management
professional to inspect your home
inside and out. A licensed profes-
sional will identify existing pest
problems and alert you to condi-
tions that are conducive to a pest
infestation. Make sure the compa-
ny you call guarantees their work.
Other pest prevention tips
include:
• Tightly seal trash cans. Pests
aren't picky about meals, and the
odours from trash can invite pests
toward the home - increasing the
likelihood they'll make their way
inside.
• Install door sweeps and
weather stripping to prevent pests
from coming in through gaps
around doors and windows.
• Caulk any holes, cracks and
gaps around your home with
weather -resistant sealant.
• Don't think of spring as the
only season for cleaning, but keep
the house free of debris the whole
year through.
• Pests need only a small
amount of food to survive, so wipe
counters and floors free of
crumbs.
In addition to preventing pests
with sanitation and home repairs,
it's a good idea to schedule regu-
lar visits with a professional. He or
she will help ensure you're ready
for the pests each season brings.

Defining our future
Growing our communities
Living our values
to the community pride of ownership in Blue Water Rest
Home. Now we are opening a new chapter in the long
and successful history of our home. After many chal-
lenges, we are in a position to begin our redevelopment
into the most modern long-term care home in the
region."
Blue Water administrator Martha Craig said, "It has
taken some time to get to this point, but the entire com-
munity has continued to make contributions for which
we are very grateful. Most of all, I credit the resolve of
the board of directors; some time ago, they said they
would not give up their efforts and not be satisfied until
Blue Water Rest Home was fully redeveloped. With this
constant support, this project has now advanced to the
point where we can proudly hold this ceremony. I must
also mention that much of our success is also due to the
significant ongoing support we received from Carol
Mitchell, our MPP, and Bill Dowson, the mayor of
Bluewater.
