Exeter seniors hold
first fall meeting
EXETER - Exeter Seniors met Sept. 2
at the Exeter Legion for their first fall
meeting. Forty-eight members and
guests enjoyed a delicious pot luck sup-
per at 6 p.m.
President Dorothy Taylor welcomed
all and opened with a couple of read-
ings, "New Teacher" and "Wooden Leg
Insurance", followed by 0' Canada and
the "The Lord's Prayer".
Happy Birthday was sung to Marion
Dougall and Dorothy Taylor.
Secretary and treasurer's reports
were given and approved.
Zone Executive Meeting Sept. 4 at
1:30 p.m. - at Riverview Estates Club
House.
Senior Advisory Committee
Jim Bearss gave his report. Read the
"Seniors' Perspective" each week in the
Exeter Times Advocate for the full
report. Exeter and Grand Bend Dining
for Seniors need volunteers - if inter-
ested see Jim's report in the Senior's
Perspective for details and contact
information. Jim also gave a reading
called "Too Fat".
Sept. 9 at 1 p.m.- shuffleboard at
Exeter Legion.
Gerald Dearing gave several readings
throughout the evening - " Grandpa
will pay the Bill", "Doggie Story" and
"Politician's Story". Linda Hokansson
read "Canadian Farmer" and "Never
Lie to a Woman".
Gerald introduced the entertainment
for the evening - Tom and Rose
Merrigan. We enjoyed their many
songs and humorous jokes throughout
the evening and they were thanked by
Jane Dearing.
Share the wealth winners: Jane
Dearing, Shirley Kirk, Linda
Hokansson, Hedy Devine, Lil Mathers
and Anna Keller.
Door prize winners were Anne Cottel,
Verna Pfaff, Bill Thomas, Marion
Dougall, Marion Astle.
Seniors' rally Oct. 9
Dorothy reminded us of the upcoming
rally in Zurich on Oct. 9 at the
Bluewater Centre. More info will be
available after the zone meeting and
will be announced at our October meet-
ing. Gerald and Jane were thanked by
Dorothy for looking after the program
and the meeting closed with "The
Seniors' Prayer".
Solo begins Sept. 10
EXETER — Throughout the
month of August, keyboard
musicians were Jean Hodgert
and Josie Ryckman.
On Aug. 5 we had
Brenda Edgar, an
ergonomist from
Clinton speak. We
held a penny sale on
Aug. 12. On Aug. 19
we heard music from
Harvey Smith and his
friends. Mary F. Dow and
Murray Christie performed
on Aug. 26.

dates will be on Sept.
16 and agian on Oct.
7and 21.
Solo will start
again at the
Lion's Youth
Centre for the fall
season at 1 p.m. on
Sept. 10. All individ-

ZURICH - Meggin Bartliff
-Reid was the recipient of
many beautiful and useful
gifts last Wednesday evening
at a community
bridal shower held
in honour of her
forthcoming wedding, held at
the Varna Church.
Sharon Chuter welcomed
everyone and Jocelyn
VanAken played a couple
numbers on the piano.
Sharon followed with a
humorous cook book quiz
and then introduced the skit
with the Varna Players once
again. Deb Rathwell played
Meggin and Carol Simons
played Shirley Hill -head of
the supper committee for the
U.C.W. They were planning
the wedding dinner for
Meggin's wedding. This
humorous skit brought a lot
of laughs as beef was dis-
cussed and Joan Beierling
entered dressed as a cow and
chicken was also discussed
and Sjoukje Steenbeek
entered dressed as a chicken.
Meggin's sister Genelle Reid
read the address to Meggin
and gifts were opened and
Meggin very graciously
thanked everyone and lunch
and fellowship followed.

Worship service on Sunday
in Varna
VARNA NEWS Church was
led by Colin
Snyder with organist Mildred
McAsh.
Colin's sermon was on
"Always Enough" .
Church will be in Varna
next Sun., Sept. 14. There
will be an important congre-
gational meeting on Sept. 21,
following the service at
Goshen Church. All church
members are encouraged to
be there.
Birthday wishes were
extended to Willi and Joe
Laurie's granddaughter Ava
Daw having her first birthday
this week, also to Jennifer
Keys, Marg Hayter and also
to Colin Snyder. Anniversary
wishes were extended to Don
and Deb Rathwell also.
Many from Varna and area
attended the Firemen's
Breakfast in Brucefield last
Saturday morning which
was another huge success.
