Fury shutout 2-0
EXETER — The
Exeter Fury were in
London Friday night to
tackle the Assyrian
team but came out on
the short end of a 2-0
score.
The Fury played a
strong second half in
an attempt to make a
comeback but in the
end were shutout for a
team record -tying
ninth time this season.
The first half saw the
Fury outplayed for the
most part.
The home team were
first to the ball on most
occasions and had
plenty of time to make
their passes as the
Fury marking was a lit-
tle lackadaisical.
This lack of marking
resulted in the first
goal.
The Assyrian striker
was left alone outside
the box and was able
to fire a long shot into
the corner of the net to
put the Fury down 1-0.
The Fury had trouble
making a pass in the
first half and looked
out of sync, tripping
over each other on a
few plays.
Exeter's best chance
in the first half came
when Pete McAllister
was sent in down the
left side on a nice pass
from Jan -Steffen
Freitag. McAllister's
low shot to the far post
curled just wide and it
was only a few minutes
later that the home
squad increased the
lead.
A corner kick found
the head of a teammate
in a crowd of three
Fury players.
The Fury didn't chal-
lenge on the cross and
the Assyrian striker
had an easy time head-
ing the ball inside the
post.
The Fury shook
things up a little bit in
the second half and it
seemed to spark the
team.
The Fury created
more offensive pres-
sure and were able to
move the ball up the
field by using the give
and go.
Ryan Hern, playing
his first game for the
team in two years since
his retirement and Tim
Hundey worked the
middle of the field
sending the ball up the
wing to McAllister who
would feed the strikers
Nick Williams and
Freitag.
Hundey had a couple
of chances in close but
was unable to connect
on a header and anoth-
er shot fired just over
the bar.
Former Fury stalwart
Greg Lamport was on
the bench for this game
inspiring the Fury to
keep pressing in an
attempt to get back
into the contest.
Nick Williams had a
strong rush into the
box but was hauled
down resulting in a
penalty shot.
Williams drilled a
shot to the corner but
the keeper made an
outstanding diving stop
and the rebound rolled
just out of the reach of
Chris Hern who was
unable to corral it and
get the shot off.
Ryan Masse made a
few excellent saves to
keep his team in the
game but the lack of
scoring punch hurt the
Fury again this game.
"If we played the
whole game like we did
in the second half we
may have had a differ-
ent result," team
spokesman Jason
McFalls stated.
The next action for
the Fury is at home on
Sunday at 7 p.m.
against the Gols team
from London.
