Mayor: Ottawa meetings "positive"
By Scott Nixon
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
SOUTH HURON β Mayor Ken Oke
said the municipality's recent meetings
in Ottawa to discuss funding for two
projects were "positive."
The municipality recently attended
the annual Association of Municipalities
of Ontario meeting in the nation's capi-
tal, and used their time to talk with
provincial Minister of Energy and
Infrastructure George Smitherman and
with the staff of federal Minister of
Transport, Infrastructure and
Communities Lawrence Cannon.
Discussed were the Grand Bend sewage
treatment plant, the Lake Huron water
pipeline and infrastructure.
Oke said the meetings went well.
Coun. Pete Armstrong said the munic-
ipality has to "stay on" the ministers'
junior associates regarding funding. He
said the province was eager to push the
ethanol project forward in Hensall and,
while the municipalities have done
their part and provided water, there is
still no ethanol plant.
Deputy Mayor George Robertson sug-
gested the municipality contact the can-
didates in the federal election and let
them know South Huron's thoughts on
funding for projects.

Council considers
revised rates
By Scott Nixon
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
SOUTH HURON β Residents of apartments might
feel better about the latest proposed water and
sewage rates South Huron council is considering.
As previously reported, council directed consultant
Andrew Grunda of Watson and Associates to take
another look at water and sewage rates after pro-
posed rates in June set off an outpouring of anger and
frustration by many residents, particularly those who
live in apartments.
Average annual water/sewage bills in Exeter under
the originally proposed new rates were to jump from
the current $758 to $1,123. In Stephen, the average
was to jump from an average current bill of $764 to
$811.
New proposals have altered those figures somewhat
after council asked Grunda to look at charging differ-
ent fees for apartment residents than those who live in
houses.
Council decided to review the new proposed rates
and make a decision at a future meeting. Any new
rates will go into effect Jan. 1, 2009.
While the previous proposed rates treated apart-
ments and homes as the same, the new rates will see
apartments charged less than houses. In the latest
proposal, Exeter apartments will be charged a quar-
terly base charge of $45.50, a quarterly debt charge
(for the $13.5 million pipeline) of $62.90, plus the con-
sumption charge of $1.76 per cubic metre. Exeter
apartment residents will also be charged $15.20 quar-
terly for their sewers, with a 68 cents per cubic metre

Heading to the polls
EXETER β With the federal election campaign
called for Oct. 14, several local candidates will contest
the campaign in Huron -Bruce that has been identified
as a key potential swing vote.
In his first federal campaign is Liberal candidate
Greg McClinchey, who has succeeded former MP Paul
Steckle, who held the riding for 15 years.
In the 2006 election that saw Conservative leader
Stephen Harper lead his party to a minority govern-
ment win, Steckle won the riding with 21,260 votes
over Conservative candidate Ben Lobb, who received
20,289 of the 53,363 eligible votes cast.
Lobb will again run as the Conservative candidate
this election.
Tony McQuail is expected to be nominated as the
NDP candidate Thursday night while Dave Joslin will
be the Christian Heritage Party candidate.
A Green Party candidate had not been announced
for Huron -Bruce when the Times -Advocate went to
press this week.
Profiles of all local candidates will appear in future
issues of the Times -Advocate.
