(photo/Scott Nixon) OPP reminds motorists of school buses on roads HURON — School has started and the OPP are reminding motorists that school buses will be back on the roads. It is the law that vehi- cles approaching a school bus from both directions must stop if the upper red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended. Vehicle owners can be charged if their vehicle illegally passes a stopped school bus. Before 2005, only the driver could be charged if he/she was identified. The total fine for not stopping for a school bus ranges from $490 up to $2,000 and six demerit points. Each subsequent offence includes a fine of $1,000 up to $4,000, six demerit points and possible jail time of up to six months. The only exception to this law is on highways separated by a median where traffic coming from the opposite direction is not required to stop. Members of the Huron OPP will be out in full force ensuring children get to school and home safely. They will be targeting school zones and bus routes to ensure all motorists get the message about safety.
