The final step for Zurich was the Huron Perth playoff tournament in Fullarton on Aug. 8-10. Zurich triumphed for the Huron Perth crown and their third championship of the season. Zurich outscored the opposition 70-15 in their four Huron Perth tournament wins. The girls are looking for- ward to attending the Ontario Rural Softball Association Awards Banquet to celebrate their provincial victory. The girls are appreciative of the extra instruction and assistance received from Ken Brideau and Brad Lucas throughout the season. The team and coaching staff thank Natalie Bedard, Kim Hendrick, Sarah Lucas and Emily Schade, their four squirt girls who played great when called upon to fill in. The team also thanks the parents and fans for support- ing the team all season. Hawks taking shape By Pat Bolen TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF EXETER — With two good tryouts last week, and a third Tuesday night, the 2008-2009 Exeter Hawks are starting to take shape, says coach Hal Flaro. The Hawks opened their tryout schedule Aug. 19 in Lucan and were in Exeter for an all -day session Aug. 23. Flaro, who is in his first year behind the bench as head coach, said the tryouts have gone well with the players working well together and showing a lot of talent. One of the surprises so far, said Flaro has been the 16 -year olds, with four or five at the tryouts and all them making it difficult to decide which will be the one the Hawks can pick. Flaro added that assistant coach Jamie Pearce has decided to move up to the general manager's position so the team is looking for anoth- er assistant coach as well as a trainer. Flaro added that the players have responded well in the tryouts and that they want to play. With an exhibition game on Saturday on the road against Lambeth and the upcoming Wingham tournament Sept. 12-14, Flaro said the coaching staff will have a good idea by then what the team will look like. "I feel it's going well," said Flaro. We have so many good players. The 16 year olds don't look out of place." Flaro said he is also adjusting quickly to being back behind the bench. "I'm feeling good, the skating is a little rusty, but you never for- get." The Hawks open their season Sept. 19 in North Middlesex and face Lucan Sept. 26 in Exeter. 'Show 'n' Shine —The Grand Bend Speedway held a 'Show 'n' Shine' Friday night to promote the track and get the public interested about what goes on there. Co- owner Sue Clarke said races are held at the track Saturday nights at 6 p.m. between May and Oct. 4 featuring drivers from seven years old to adults. The track, origi- nally built in 1996, was expanded and repaved in 2007 and is now a quarter -mile tri -oval track with a 12 degree bank in the corners.Clarke said the Speedway can have as many as 90 drivers on a good night and attracts competitors from as far away as North Bay, Barrie, Kitchener and Windsor."It's a lot of fun," she said.
