Truck fire — South Huron firefighters responded to a truck fire Aug. 26 at about noon at a driveway in
Exeter near the corner of Huron and Main streets. Fire chief John Morgan said the fire department was called
when smoke was seen coming from underneath the hood near the battery. He said the cause of the fire was
probably an electric problem.The 1989 Chevy pickup was destroyed. (photo/Scott Nixon)
Students head back to school
SEAFORTH — Avon Maitland's
new director of education Chuck
Reid is in the pilot's chair as over
18,000 students headed back to
school Tuesday. Forty-four public
elementary and nine public sec-
ondary schools in the district
opened their doors once again to
the children and teens of Huron
and Perth counties.
Reid says this is an especially
exciting time for him as he settles
into his Seaforth office.
"The start of a new school year is
always invigorating," he says. "But
for me personally it's extra special
this year being a part of the Avon
Maitland team. We are a progres-
sive board and I have been very
impressed with the quality and
dedication of our staff. I see a very
bright future for the students in our
public elementary and secondary
schools in Huron and Perth as we
continue to focus on providing the
best education possible for our
youth."
As in the past school year there
are six Professional Activity Days
scheduled. Both the Avon Maitland
and Huron Perth Catholic Boards
use the same school year calendar,
so students from both boards will
not attend classes on these days.
The Professional Activity days will
take place Wed., Oct. 1; Fri., Nov. 7;
Fri., Dec. 5; Thurs., Jan. 29; Wed.,
April 22; and Fri., June 26.
The school holidays for 2008 -
2009 are as follows:
• Oct. 13 — Thanksgiving Day;
• Dec. 22 - Jan. 2 — Christmas
Break;
• Feb. 16 — Family Day;
• March 16 – 20 — March Break;
• April 10 — Good Friday;
• April 13 — Easter Monday;
• May 18 — Victoria Day.
Balanced school day
All the board's public elementary
schools will be using the balanced
school day schedule in 2008-2009
with the exception of the grade 7-8
schools at the two Stratford sec-
ondary schools. The balanced
school day is divided into three
equal learning segments separated
by two 40 -minute nutrition breaks.
Summer construction
projects
Over the summer months 28 ren-
ovation and renewal projects were
undertaken across the district, at a
value of over $6.3 million. Some of
the projects involved normally
scheduled upgrades to building
infrastructure, while others were
related to the provincial govern-
ment initiatives. As a result of fund-
ing made available by the province,
schools across the district were on
the receiving end of such things as
boiler replacements, new windows
and doors, electrical and mechani-
cal upgrades and roofing upgrades.
New Faces at the Education
Centre
Over the summer there were a
number of new appointments at the
Education Centre in Seaforth. Mike
Ash is the new Superintendent of
Education, replacing Marie Parsons
who left the board to join the
EQAO. Ash will be responsible for
school operations, safe schools, and
information services.
Former South Huron District High
School principal Jeff Reaburn has
moved into Ash's former job as
System Principal of Information
Services. Jodie Baker, the principal
the past four years at Mitchell DHS,
moves to the Ed Centre at System
Principal of Program.
Superintendent Ted Doherty takes
on the Special Education Portfolio
held by Marie Parsons. Doherty will
also oversee the Student Success
initiative and serve as the
Supervisory Office for the board's
secondary schools.
Changes in administrations
Reaburn will be replaced at South
Huron by Kevin Mills, former prin-
cipal of St. Marys DCVI. Stephen
Central principal Carol Rauser has
moved to South Perth Centennial to
be that school's principal. She is
replaced at Stephen by Rick Van
Maanen from the Thames Valley
District School Board.
Leanne
Hoffman will be
South Huron's
student senator
for the year.
