The Times Advocate, 2008-08-27, Page 2424 TIMES—ADVOCATE Wednesday, August 27, 2008 FneLpuper Announcements/Community Fft! Exeter Time s -Advo c ate hosting essay contest In 2009, the Ontario Provincial Police will be celebrat- ing its 100th anniversary of service to the citizens of Ontario. From its original strength of one commission- er, six inspectors and 38 constables, the OPP has grown into an internationally recognized organization with nearly 6,000 uniform and 2,000 civilian personnel policing six regions and 93 detachments across the Province of Ontario. Commemorative watch To help celebrate the anniversary, the Ontario Provincial Police Commissioned Officers Association has commissioned the making of a commemorative watch for this historic occasion. The watch has been designed by Time is Ticking Inc. It is made with Seiko movements, 24 karat raised gold plating, polished, stainless steel engraved collector's case back and a Speidel alligator style leather strap, available in black, red or blue. Part of the OPP Commissioned Officers Association proceeds will be donated to the OPP Summer Youth Camp, which is run annually to bring young people and police together to foster positive relationships between them; along with other initiatives. As part of the OPP centennial celebrations and for a limited time only, the 100th anniversary watch is also being offered to the general public. The cost of the watch is $65. Enter to win Our newspaper is proud to be part of the promotion of this commemorative watch and the upcoming cen- tennial anniversary. The organizers have agreed to donate a watch as a prize to one of our readers. This is what the Exeter Times Advocate would like you to do. Submit a written essay (you can include photographs if you like) to show the public's support of the OPP and their many years of dedicated good work in making the communities of our province safer for all with a special focus on local detachments. A panel of independent judges will decide which essay is the best. The prize will be awarded and the essay will be showcased in an issue of the Times Advocate. Entrants must be at least 12 years old and up to enter. The entries can either be dropped off at our office at 424 Main Street South, Exeter or sent by e-mail to: dlord@southhuron.com. The deadline is Sept. 19, 2008 at 5 p.m. As a point of trivia, are you aware that the OPP crest is on the shoulder of Paul McCartney's uniform and is highly visible on the cover of the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album? It was given to John Lennon and John gave it to Paul. OPP celebrates 100 years In anticipation of the momentous event and to allow for watches to be delivered in time for Christmas 2008 so that they could be worn with pride throughout the actual anniversary, the deadline for ordering a watch is Oct. 1. Time is Ticking Inc. is an Ontario firm which has completed successful campaigns for all levels of gov- ernment and private sector including the Victory Europe 60th anniversary watch, City of Toronto, Toronto Police and Toronto Fire Service watches and 100th anniversary watch campaigns for Canadian Military Engineers and Communications and Electronics, in addition to successful campaigns for VIA Rail, Embridge, Canada Post and the Royal Canadian Mint, to name but a few.
