The Fury began the game with only 11 players including three players called up to fill out the ros- ter. The play was fairly equal in the first 15 minutes but St. Thomas soon began to apply pressure to Exeter's defense. The visitors struck first with a shot that Fury substitute keeper Shawn McFalls had no chance on. St. Thomas added to its lead on an individual effort by its striker, deking through the Exeter squad and finishing the play by picking the lower right corner to make it 2- 0. The Fury fought back before half- time with a goal of its own on a well struck corner kick by Tony Van Mierlo that hit a leg in front and deflected over the goal line to make it 2-1 at halftime. The Fury started the second half with only 10 players when one of their callups had another appoint- ment. The team did its best to withstand the St. Thomas attack but eventual- ly the visitors picked up a couple more goals to make it 4-1 and appeared to have a stranglehold on the outcome. Exeter continued to battle through and was nearly rewarded when a shot by Dylan Fidler nar- rowly missed the net from in close. Chris Hern notched the second Fury goal minutes later after Jason McFalls intercepted a clearing pass. The ball rolled to Fidler who fed Hern charging in from his sweeper position. Hern picked the corner to give Exeter some life. Despite being shorthanded the Fury continued to control the play in the St. Thomas end and if it was- n't for the St. Thomas keeper the score would have been closer. The visiting keeper robbed Van Mierlo on a left foot blast and refused to give up any rebounds, preventing the Fury from creeping closer. Exeter gave up another goal late to round out the scoring. The next action for the Fury is Sept. 5 in London against the Assyrians at 8:30 p.m. at Adelaide and Windermere fields. "It's been a struggle finding enough players for each game this year but I give the guys credit for competing hard every time out," team spokesperson Jason McFalls commented. "The lack of young players com- ing up through the minor soccer system really puts the future of the Fury in question for next season," McFalls added. "I want the handful of dedicated guys to have a team to play for next season because they deserve it but we want to be competitive also. Where do the players come from when a lot of kids stop playing the sport at the age of 16 and only a few may love the sport enough to want to play men's soccer when they get older? If anyone has the answers I am more than willing to listen to suggestions. At this stage, after 16 years, I'm not sure there will be a 17th season for the Exeter Fury," McFalls explained. Regier was a member of the Region 3B team for southwestern Ontario that competed in the Summer Games in Ottawa from Aug. 14-16. Regier has been playing volleyball since grade six and was invited to join the Ontario team by his high school coach. He was selected for the team after a tryout in London that was followed by a four-day tournament at Humber College in Toronto for team bonding. Playing the left side power position, Regier said while the team only won one game, it played well together and got better with each game it played. Regier also said he improved personally in his passing and serving. "I learned a lot of drills and skills to pass on," said Regier. "It was so much fun. The experience was amazing."
