RIDING THE BUS
To ensure optimum safety, it is important for children to follow the rules on
school buses. Parents can play an important role in preparing their children for
safety both inside and outside of the bus by reinforcing the following tips:
1. Choose a safe spot to wait for the bus - away from traffic and
off the street.
2. Wait until the bus has stopped and the door has opened
before stepping onto the roadway.
3. Always take at least 10 steps in front of the bus and wait for
the school bus driver to signal you before you cross.
4. Be aware of traffic all around you - other drivers don't always
follow the road signs.
5. Hold on to the rail when you enter and exit the bus.
6. No rough play on or near a bus.
7. Sit directly in your seat with your bag beside you or under the
seat in front of you.
8. Never put head, hands or arms out the window.
9. Keep noise to a minimum so you do not distract the driver.
10. Keep aisles clear of clutter - they are tripping hazards or can
block the way in an emergency.
WALKING AND BIKING TO SCHOOL
Even if you don't ride in a motor vehicle, you still have to protect yourself.
Because of minimal supervision, young pedestrians face a wide variety of
decision-making situations and dangers while walking to and from school.
Here are a few basic safety tips to follow:
• Mind all traffic signals and/or the crossing guard - never cross the street against
a light, even if you don't see any traffic coming.
• Walk your bike through intersections.
• Walk with a buddy.
• Wear reflective material...it makes you more visible to street traffic.
RIDING INA CAR
• You might have heard that most traffic crashes occur
close to home ...they do.
• Safety belts are the best form of protection O
passengers have in the event of a crash.
They can lower your risk of injury by 45 per cent.
• You are four times more likely to be seriously
injured or killed if ejected from the vehicle in
a crash.
• Everyone needs to be buckled up properly.
That means older kids in seat belts, younger
kids in booster seats and little kids in child safety seats.
