Hodgert was tak- ing part in the 2008 Team Canada Polar Bears Ringette Tour, which saw two teams of Canadian players tour Germany, Sweden, Finland, Czech Republic and Slovakia from July 26 to Aug. 10. Hodgert was part of Team Extreme which played four exhibition and six tournament games. It went undefeat- ed except for their last game of the Prague tournament against Team Get R Done from Canada, which saw an 8-6 loss for Hodgert's team. Hodgert said there are differ- ences in the rules and style of play of ringette in Europe, with the shot clock only starting when the player carrying the ring crosses her own blueline, instead of as in Canada where it starts when the goalie lets the ring go. Hodgert said ref- erees also call more stick penal- ties in Europe, unlike Canada where body penal- ties are more often called. She said with the more time allowed in Europe, it gives players more time to make plays, rather than in Canada where players head straight for the net. "I like the inter- national shot clock," says Hodgert. "There is more time to think." Over the course of the games, Hodgert said she had the chance to learn from other players on the team, including Jess Jones from St. Thomas, who was Proud Canadian —Alana Hodgert of Exeter was proud to wear her country's jersey recently in Europe when she was a member of the Team Canada Polar Bears Ringette Tour. Hodgert is hoping to take part in the tour again next year, which is planning on adding more countries, including Russia. TEAM TRYOUTS Aug. 20 7 - 9 P.M. Lucan Aug. 23 10 - 12 P.M. Exeter 2 - 4 P.M.
