(photo/Pat Bolen) Summer flower show in Kirkton KIRKTON - The Kirkton Horticultural Society held its sum- mer flower show and competition, Festival of Flowers, at the Kirkton- Woodham Community Centre Aug. 12. A feast for the senses greeted guests, as directors Cathy Barker and Doris Richardson had trans- formed the entrance of the centre into an elegant Victorian garden party setting, complete with settee and whimsical obelisks and planti- ngs. After the singing of "0 Canada," president Sandra Kemp thanked Marjorie Johns for her prelude piano selections of seasonal favourites. Director Robert Traut then thanked all eight participants who had prepared their gardens for the June 22 garden tour. This was held in conjunction with Kirkton Horticultural Society and South Perth Centennial School, with a por- tion designated for new playground equipment at the school. Traut then reviewed the successful evening workshop conducted at BlackCreek Flower Farm, Sebringville. Laura Barker of Catherine Wright Designs, Stratford, instructed approximately 35 people on the construction of a hand -tied bouquet, with fresh flowers provid- ed from the farm. Owner/operator Karin McDougall gave guided tours through the cut flower fields and the eight -acre gladiola farm. Participants enjoyed viewing the numerous new gladiola specimen test plots that plant breeders have selected for Black Creek Flower Farms to produce. Director Toni Denotter then announced the upcoming trip on Sept. 23 to Glendale Herb Farm near Forest. This workshop/tour includes the opportunity to make a dried floral wreath or tussie mussie. Director Gertrude Willis then reminded the audience of the Nov. 12 Christmas design workshop con- ducted by floral designer Tony Manders. A portion of the proceeds from this workshop will be given to a worthy charity. The highlight of the evening arrived as director Rosemary Schaefer introduced the featured speaker, Paul Zamit, of Plant World in Toronto. A graduate of the University of Guelph's plant program, Zamit has been a guest speaker/demonstrator at numerous garden shows, includ- ing Canada Blooms, and featured in House and Garden and Canadian Gardening magazines. Using a slide presentation and printed handout, Zamit illustrated and described the principles and practices of putting a container gar- den together, and then demonstrat- ed the `thriller, filler, spiller' con- cepts by producing three container gardens for the appreciative audi- ence. These enormous containers were later auctioned by director Owen O'Brien, with the proceeds allocated to the programs of the Kirkton Horticultural Society. Everyone enjoyed this presenta- tion and especially Zamit's availabil- ity at the end of the evening to answer any and every gardening query. Director and show chair Cindy Bilyea then announced the results of the flower show competition. Bilyea reported that judges Cathy Filson and Janice Maciver made special mention of the top quality entries and designs. The Quadro communications co- operative special awards winners are as follows: Best gladiola, Cathy Barker; best rose exhibit, Doris Richardson; best design in show, Gertrude Willis; best plant exhibit, Cathy Barker; most points in cut flower division, Elaine Stephen; most points in container exhibit, Pat Down; most points in design class, Gertrude Willis; most points in vegetable class, Elaine Stephen and most points in show, Elaine Stephen. The children's junior section awards were presented to: first, Jamie Clark; and second, Joel Denotter and Katie Willis and junior B division: first, Nicole Willis. Bilyea thanked all the entrants for their excellent and dedicated work. Kemp then adjourned the meeting with the reminder to check the upcoming trips and workshops and invited everyone to stay for lunch. All enjoyed visiting with the speak- er and viewing the wonderful array of floral designs. Go further. Save money. Drive cleaner.
