43rdAnnual Zurich Bean Fest starts Friday

ZURICH CORRESPONDENT
ZURICH - Congratulations to Doug and
Sharon Kyle of RR 2 Zurich who recently
celebrated their 25th anniversary on Aug.
6. A celebration was held in their honour
in July outdoors at their home with sever-
al relatives and friends attending.
A baby shower was held for Roxanne
McClenaghan (nee Regier) recently given
by her friend, Renee Sweeney in London
with everyone getting a chance to meet
little Ruby.
Jody Schilbe of Calgary recently spent a
week in the area with members of her
family and parents Gordie and Jeanne
Hay in Exeter and in-laws; Hubert and
Marge Schilbe Zurich.
Congratulations go out to Melanie
Regier and David Levison who were mar-
ried on Sat., Aug. 16 in Toronto with sev-
eral relatives attending from the Zurich
area. The bride is the daughter of Cecil
and Wanda Regier of RR 3 Zurich. The
couple will be living near Zurich.
Several relatives from the area attended
the wedding of Jeremy Denomme and
Louisa Bestard on Sat., Aug. 9 at St.
Luke's Church in London with dinner and
reception held in Thorndale. The groom
is the son of Paul and Madeline Denomme
who live in London and cottage at the
lake.
Pam Regier and fiance Joe McNeill of
New Brunswick spent last week with her
parents Pat and Evelyn Regier at RR 3
Zurich. And all enjoyed going to Niagara
Falls. Also Pam and Joe attended the
wedding of her friend Melanie Regier in
Toronto last Saturday.
Leo and Irene Hoffman spent the past
two weeks going on a bus trip out east
with Ellison Travel from Exeter.
The family of James and Patty Hunt
went camping near Owen Sound all last
week and visited his parents who live
close to there.
Fair Board celebrates
A delicious volunteer appreciation sup-
per for the Zurich Agriculture Society
(Fair Board) was enjoyed by many last
Wednesday at the home of director Paul
and Heather Klopp, followed by a short
meeting by president Hilda Lansbergen
and Margaret Deichert. We were happy
to receive a cheque for $1,400 from the
Lions Club from the Elimination Draw.
Our next regular meeting will be held on
Thurs., Sept. 25 at 8 p.m. at the Town
Hall. The annual district #8 dinner /
meeting is at the Legion in Clinton on
Tues., Oct. 28 at 6:30 p.m.
Zurich Mennonite Church
An open house from 2-4 p.m. will be
held at the Mennonite Church Hall on
Sun., Aug. 31 to help Seleda Steckle cele-
brate her `100th birthday'! She is cur-
rently a resident at the Bluewater Rest
Home.
Several families of the Kingsfield Clinton
and Zurich Mennonite Church enjoyed
going camping for the weekend at the Old
Homestead in Bayfield. On Saturday
evening others joined them for a bonfire,
sharing stories and singing songs.
The Seaforth Harmony Kings (barber
shop group) are planning to have their
25th anniversary show with the "Ballagh
Bunch" on Sat., Sept. 27 at the public
school gymnasium in Seaforth starting at
8 p.m. sharp. Advance tickets are
$12.50, call 238-2973 or $15 at the door.
Children under 12 years old are free.
A family get together and supper was
held at the home of Mary -Lou Denomme
Sat., Aug. 16 with several coming from
various places.
The Monday night ladies bowling league
will soon be starting again on Mon., Sept.
8 at 7 p.m. for all those wanting to join in
on the fun and exercises. Call Barb at
236-4923. New people in the area
(Zurich, Hensall, Dashwood, etc.) are
most welcome. We are not a competitive
group - just call it the ladies' night out!
Ladies Auxiliary
The Ladies Auxiliary held their last
meeting at the rest home with a great
musical program by Rural Roots. A good
attendance was held for our meeting.
Stacey informed us of all the events going
on for August complete with a campfire
at Patty Groot's and lunch at Woodland
near Bayfield and a picnic lunch by the
beach in Goderich (to name only a few
things.)
Recently the auxiliary purchased some
new equipment for the beauty shop with
the main item being a portable hair dryer
for the residents. Volunteers were asked
to sell quilt tickets at our Bean Festival
booth near the bake shop this Sat., Aug.
23. Please note that all returns of money
and ticket stubs are to go to Hilda
Lansbergen.
The annual region #3 meeting will be
held at the Spruce Lodge Home in
Stratford on Wed., Sept. 24 beginning
with registration at 9:30 a.m. which costs
$10 person for the day with lunch. If
wanting to go call Carmel 236-4702.
The Alzheimer's Coffee Break will be
held at the rest home on Thurs., Sept. 18
beginning at 2:30 p.m. with a speaker in
the auditorium. Everyone in the commu-
nity is invited to attend!
Our next meeting will be held on Tues.,
Nov. 4 at 6:30 p.m.
Actifest Senior Games 2008
Thirty-six participants from Huron -
Perth -Middlesex District 29 took part in
Actifest Senior Games 2008 in London at
the University of Western Ontario this
past week from Aug. 12 - 14. There were
1,500 participants from all over Ontario
taking part. From Zurich - Jack and
Joan Powell - bid euchre, Harvey and
Charolotte Norton -euchre, Audrey Smith
and Bill Coleman - cribbage. Gord and
Cecilia Smith - 3 km walking. No medals
from this group but it was reported that
this was an excellent three day event!
Bean Festival this weekend!
You won't want to miss the 43rd Annual
Zurich Bean Festival this weekend!
Vintage car cruise on Friday night with
fireworks; all day street market on
Saturday with main stage entertainment.
Homecooked bean and pork chop dinners
are served from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in
front of the Bean Festival Kitchen.

End of summer —The Exeter Library Summer Reading Program wrapped up for the

Terry Fox Run
Sun., Sept. 14
EXETER — This year's
Terry Fox Run in Exeter is
slated for Sun., Sept. 14 at
the MacNaughton Trail.
The annual cancer
fundraiser starts at 10 a.m.
and runs until 2 p.m.
Last year's Exeter run
raised $15,158.66, a 72 per
cent increase over the money
raised the previous year.
Exeter Terry Fox co-ordina-
tor Ann DeVries said the
increase was listed in the
provincial newsletter, as was
a picture of local fundraising
team "Len's Day."
DeVries said, "Exeter, your
support for fundraising for
cancer research is a big step
towards finding a cure for
cancer. Please consider com-
ing out to walk, run, bike or
rollerblade Sept. 14."
For those unable to partici-
pate, DeVries said they can
still sponsor someone taking
part in the run.

amount of Terry Fox shirts
available. She can be

The National School Run
Day for the Terry Fox Run is
Fri., Sept., 26. Last year's
School Run Day raised $6.5
million in Ontario from 3,400
schools.
