hot weather upon us, we recognize that seniors are more
susceptible to the dangers of heat and dehydration.
As a public service, Queensway Retirement Living is
offering local seniors the opportunity to come in out of
the heat and enjoy our fully air-conditioned space.
Seniors are invited to visit us during the heat of the day,
and come in and relax with cold refreshments, enjoy an
activity or visit with a friend. Meals are available for a
nominal charge. Respite and vacation stays are also wel-

Household hints:
1. Reheat Pizza: Heat up leftover pizza in a nonstick
skillet on top of the stove, set heat to med-low and heat
till warm. This keeps the crust crispy. No soggy
microwaved pizza. I saw this on the cooldng channel and
it really works!
2. Easy Deviled Eggs: Put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock
bag. Seal, mash till they are all broken up. Add remain-
der of ingredients, reseal, keep mashing it up mixing
thoroughly, and cut the tip of the baggy, squeeze mixture
into egg. Just throw bag away when done easy clean up.
3. Expanding frosting: When you buy a container of
cake frosting from the store, whip it with your mixer for
a few minutes. You can double it in size. You get to frost
more cake/cupcakes with the same amount. You also eat
less sugar and calories per serving.
4. Reheating refrigerated bread: To warm biscuits,
pancakes, or muffins that were refrigerated, place them
in a microwave with a cup of water. The increased mois-
ture will keep the food moist and help it reheat faster.
5. Newspaper weeds away: Start putting in your plants;
work the nutrients in your soil. Wet newspapers put lay-
ers around the plants overlapping as you go cover
with mulch and forget about weeds. Weeds will get
through some gardening plastic they will not get
through wet newspapers.
6. Broken glass clean up: Use a wet cotton ball or
Q-tip to pick up the small shards of glass you can't
see easily.
7. No more mosquitoes: Place a dryer sheet in
your pocket. It will keep the mosquitoes away.
8. Squirrels away: To keep squirrels from eating
arss your plants sprinkle your plants with cayenne pep-
per. The cayenne pepper doesn't hurt the plant and
the squirrels won't come near it.
9. Flexible vacuum nozzle: To get something out of a
heat register or under the fridge add an empty paper
towel roll or empty gift wrap roll to your vacuum. It can
be bent or flattened to get in narrow openings.
10. Reducing static cling: Pin a small safety pin to the
seam of your slip and you will not have a clingy skirt or
dress. Same thing works with slacks that cling when
wearing panty hose. Place pin in seam of slacks and stat-
ic is gone.
11. Measuring cups clean-up: Before you pour sticky
substances into a measuring cup, fill with hot water.
Dump out the hot water, but don't dry cup. Next, add
your ingredient, such as peanut butter, and watch how
easily it comes right out.
12. Hate foggy windshields? Buy a chalkboard eraser
and keep it in the glove box of your car. When the win-
dows fog, rub with the eraser! Works better than a cloth!
13. Reopening envelope: If you seal an envelope and
then realize you forgot to include something inside, just
place your sealed envelope in the freezer for an hour or
two. Voila! It unseals easily.
14. Hair conditioner: Use your hair conditioner to
shave your legs. It's a lot cheaper than shaving cream
and leaves your legs really smooth. It's also a great way
to use up the conditioner you bought but didn't like when
you tried it in your hair.
15. Goodbye fruit flies: To get rid of pesky fruit flies,
take a small glass fill it 1/2" with apple cider vinegar and
two drops of dish washing liquid mix well. You will find
the flies drawn to the cup and are gone forever!
16. Get rid of ants: Put small piles of cornmeal where
you see ants. They eat it, take it "home" and can't digest
it so it kills them. It may take a week or so, especially if it
rains, but it works and you don't have the worry about
pets or children.
The Moped...
An elderly man on a Moped, looking about 100 years
old, pulls up next to a doctor at a street light. The old
man looks over at the sleek shiny car and asks, What
kind of car ya got there, sonny?' The doctor replies, 'A
Ferrari GTO. It cost half a million dollars!' 'That's a lot
of money,' says the old man. 'Why does it cost so much?'
'Because this car can do up to 320 miles an hour!' states
the doctor proudly. The Moped driver asks, 'Mind if I
take a look inside?' 'No problem,' replies the doctor. So
the old man pokes his head in the window and looks
around. Then, sitting back on his Moped, the old man
says, that's a pretty nice car, all right... But I'll stick with
my Moped!' Just then the light changes, so the doctor
decides to show the old man just what his car can do. He
floors it, and within 30 seconds the speedometer reads
160 mph. Suddenly, he notices a dot in his rear view
mirror. It seems to be getting closer! He slows down to
see what it could be and suddenly... WH0000SSSHHH!
Something whips by him going much faster! 'What on
earth could be going faster than my Ferrari?' the doctor
asks himself. He presses harder on the accelerator and
takes the Ferrari up to 250 mph. then, up ahead of him,
he sees that it's the old man on the Moped! Amazed that
the Moped could pass his Ferrari, he gives it more gas
and passes the Moped at 275 mph. He's feeling pretty
good until he looks in his mirror and sees the old man
gaining on him! Astounded by the speed of this old guy,
he floors the gas pedal and takes the Ferrari all the way
up to 320 mph. Not ten seconds later, he sees the Moped
bearing down on him again! The Ferrari is flat out, and
there's nothing he can do! Suddenly, the Moped plows
into the back of his Ferrari, demolishing the rear end.
The doctor stops and jumps out and, unbelievably the old
man is still alive. He runs up to the banged -up old guy
and says, 'I'm a doctor.... Is there anything I can do for
you?' The old man whispers, 'Unhook my suspenders
from your side view mirror.' Bill Tinney
Smile: An old man was sitting in the front row at a
town meeting, heckling the mayor as he delivered a long
speech. Finally the mayor could stand it no longer, so he
pointed to the heckler and said, "Will that gentleman
stand up and tell the audience what he has ever done for
the good of the town." "Well Mr. Mayor," the man said in
a firm voice, "I voted against you in the last election."
