Regional wrap up
Tourists still coming
GODERICH — With a struggling economy, tourists who
might have gone out of the province are visiting Huron
County, says the Goderich Signal -Star.
Tourism Goderich travel counsellor Neil Salter said
while there are not as many young families coming to the
area, there are a lot of retirees making up the difference.
He said the tourist centre sees between 120-150 people
a day, which increases significantly when the weather is
good.
Winemaking in Huron
CLINTON — Wine may be the next big product coming
out of Huron County, says the Clinton News -Record. The
idea comes from Richard Fitoussi, owner of the Little Inn
in Bayfield, who has looked into the soil quality, geogra-
phy and weather patterns of the area.
Fitoussi says while looking for local food growers, he
was surprised to find peach trees in the area known as
the Huron County Ridge.
He says if peach trees can grow here, so can grapes and
there have been six varieties of grapes identified with the
potential to grow here.
Wind energy
SEAFORTH — Suncor Energy has been signing agree-
ments with Huron East landowners for possible wind
power projects, says the Seaforth Huron -Expositor.
Company spokesperson Coral Hulse says the Alberta
company has been meeting with landowners since
January and studying wind conditions in the area bor-
dered by Winthrop Road, Manley Line, Highway 8 and
Division Line.
But plans for the project can only go so far since the
area has been designated as an "Orange Zone" by the
Ontario Power Authority, where the transmission system
has limited or no ability to accept new generation.

Gellatly takes over United Way
GODERICH — A talented and experienced fund
developer with a strong background in marketing
and public relations is joining Huron United Way
as executive director.
"It's a natural fit," says Michelle Gellatly, former
executive director of three not for profit organiza-
tions: Caritas Hospitals Foundation in Edmonton;
Sunshine Dreams for Kids in London and Across
Languages Translation and Interpretation Services
also in London,
Gellatly was approved by the board of directors
May 26.
"We are delighted to welcome Michelle to our
dynamic organization," said board chairperson
Randy Stanlake.
"She brings a wealth of experience to the com-
munity, and will continue to move the Huron
United Way to the next level."
Gellatly graduated from the University of
Western Ontario in 1983 with a Bachelor of Arts
degree and in 2001 with an MBA specializing in
Public Relations and Communications from Royal
Roads University in Victoria, B.C.
Her career spans small business, corporate,
manufacturing, education, health care and not for
profit sectors.
In addition Gellatly has held development roles at
the University of Alberta and Brescia College
(London) building donor databases, volunteer and
donor recognition programs, and strengthening
alumnae and community relations.
Gellatly lives in London but plans to move to
Huron County, where she already has ties.
One of the projects Gellatly is interested in is the
Virtual Volunteer portal.
She says many people would like to volunteer but
have only a limited amount of hours and the online
site will connect them to groups that will make the
most of their time.
While there are more groups than ever looking
for fundraising dollars, Gellaty says as long as peo-
ple can see where their money is going, the United
Way will remain important.
"It has to be personal," she says. "I think the
important thing with the United Way is the money
stays in Huron County...it's always been important
that people help support their own community and
