FARM SAFETY FACTS
A r M SAFETY
It is estimated that every year in Canada there are 130 farm -related deaths, 1,200 people are hospitalized from farm -related
injuries, and 50,000 people sustain farm -related injuries requiring them to either seek medical attention or take a day away from
normal work activities. Of all agriculture -related injuries, 65 per cent of fatal injuries and 50 per cent of injuries requiring
hospitalization are related to the use of agricultural machinery. The very young and the elderly are at the greatest risk of injury on
the farm. Source: Canadian Agricultural Injury Surveillance Program (CAISP) Estimates, AAFC and CCASRH

WHO I5 INJURED ON THE FARM?
The very young and the elderly are most at risk
of injury on the farm, however injuries can hap-
pen to anyone.
PREVENTING INJURIES ON THE
FARM
Here are some general safety
tips to prevent the leading caus-
es of injury and death on
Alberta farms:
MACHINERY INJURIES
• No extra riders should be
allowed on farm machinery.
• Obtain proper training for the
machinery you are using.
• Equip machinery with guards and rollover
protective structures when appropriate.
• Do not adjust machinery while it is being
powered.
• Avoid operating machinery when you are
fatigued, distracted, ill, or have been drinking.
• Be aware of terrain to anticipate hazards that
might cause a rollover of machinery.
FALL INJURIES
• Take care when climbing on and off
machinery.
• Take extra precautions when you are using a
ladder or working on elevated platforms.
ENTANGLEMENTS
• Never adjust machinery when it is powered.
• Do not wear loose fitting clothing around
moving machinery parts.
ANIMAL TRAUMA
• Wear the proper horseback riding helmet.
• Learn how to properly handle and care for all
large animals such as cows and horses.
• Always have an escape route planned when
you are working in a confined area with large
animals.
OTHER INJURIES
• Read and follow all
instructions on the labels
of chemicals, pesticides,
fertilizers and cleaning
agents.
• Fence and enclose open
water areas to prevent
drowning.
• Never enter storage areas where grain is
being loaded or unloaded, and never stand
on top of grain. If it begins to flow you can be
buried in less than ten seconds.
• Wear safety equipment and have proper
training for operating all -terrain vehicles
(ATV's).
• Fill in abandoned wells.
PREVENTING AGE-RELATED FARM INJURIES
• Match children's abilities with agricultural job
requirements and always supervise children
working on the farm. Consult the 'North
America Guidelines of Children's Agricultural
Tasks' for specific gudielines.
• Older farmers should have regular medical
check ups for vision and hearing impairment

FIRST AID CAN SAVE LIVES ON
THE FARM
It is critical for all farmers, employees and family
members to be trained in first aid and emergency
scene management. This is particularly important in
rural areas where there tends to be a longer wait for
professional medical help to arrive. First aid is
defined as the emergency help given to an injured
person using readily available materials. Emergency
scene management is the sequence of actions that
should be followed at the scene of an emergency to
ensure that safe and appropriate first aid is given.
Farming is one of Canada's most hazardous occu-
pations, and the fact that the farm combines a family
home with an industrial work site underscores an
increased threat to children and seniors. This makes
the need for first aid training exceptionally important
for everyone involved with farming. While not every
farm hazard can be removed from the farm, the risks
can be controlled. Prevention is the key to maintain-
ing farm safety and good family health. However,
accidents can happen at anytime.
Have a list of emergency telephone numbers
beside every telephone and place first aid kits in
strategic locations in your house and on your farm.
This will save invaluable time during an emergency.
