July 29 Exeter pitcher Chris Gosnell had a dominating game against the London Bulls, said team spokesperson Joe Fulop. Fulop said it was likely Gosnell's best game of the year, so far, as he struck out 13 Bulls and allowed only three hits in the 3-0 Exeter win. The game was close as the Express hitters were able to ring up 11 hits but left many stranded runners. Exeter was able to score a single run in the first inning as Rob Burk doubled and scored on a sin- gle by Adam Leppington. They scored anoth- er in the second as Terry Hogg singled again and was driven home by Tim Eifert's monster triple. Aaron Patterson and Burk singled and their speed led to a third run in the third inning Hogg and Burk led the team with three hits each. The Express com- pleted their league schedule with a dou- ble header against Tillsonburg Friday night. Fulop said the two teams have an intense rivalry which has been evident since the league was created. "It would be con- troversial, but fair, to say that Tillsonburg has a solid team," said Fulop. "The same would be true for the Express. "It would also be accurate to say that Tillsonburg can play a style of game which is meant to upset the opposition, the umpires and espe- cially star players on the other team. "The Express tend to use verbal reac- tions to actions by the other team. "They stay away from those tactics if it is possible. They can give as much as they take if needed." Fulop said on Friday, the Express players showed remarkable self restraint as eight players were hit by pitches, as the umpires faced a bar- rage of criticism and as the Red Sox played a rough and tough style on the basepa- ths. The two teams began a best of five series Tuesday night in Exeter, in round one of the league playoffs. In game one Friday night both teams had their hitting shoes on. The Express jumped ahead early to a 5-1 lead. Tillsonburg rallied and tied the game at seven in the sixth inning. The Express scored two more in the sixth and finally had the victory. Derek Masse pitched well in lasting the whole game. He looked to be tired but didn't want to come out of the game. Tillsonburg pounded out 13 hits during the contest as Masse struck out eight batters. Pitching held up in game two. Tillsonburg had eight hits while striking out twice. Defense played a big part in these games. Diving catches by Rob Burke and Brian McCleod kept the Express in the game. Bobbie Grant tossed out any Tillsonburg runners who tried to gain on the bases. The combo of Patterson and Hawke played their usual strong games. The best offensive performances on the day came from Grant with four hits while Burk had three hits and Patterson added one hit and four walks.
