"Innocence lost" recreates a night in 1959
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
BLYTH — With 14 -year-old Curtis teBrinke of Clinton
in the lead role, "Innocence Lost: A Play About Steven
Truscott" opened to a packed house at the Blyth
Festival Friday night.
teBrinke has been on the stage in
Blyth before having played the young
Tommy Connors in "The Ballad of
Stompin' Tom" in 2006 as well as
appearing in "The Thirteenth One"
in 2005.
teBrinke is directed by Miles Potter
with a script written by Beverly
Cooper.
teBrinke is the same age as Steven
Truscott was in 1959 when he was
arrested for the murder of 12 -year-
old Lynne Harper.
Although teBrinke plays the central
role, much of the play focuses on a fictional character of
13 -year-old Sarah, who is described as a fictional char-
acter who represents multiple members of the commu-
nity, to tell the story.
"Innocence Lost" follows Sarah from the hours before
the murder as her, Harper, Truscott and other children
enjoy a summer night until Harper goes missing and is
eventually found dead.
The play gradually speeds up as events overtake both
the audience and Truscott, leaving both overwhelmed.
Sarah's feelings change as the play goes on, from
admitting to a crush on Truscott to seeing him guilty
before experiencing questions of his guilt as the years
go by.
"Innocence Lost, a play about Steven Truscott" plays
at the Blyth Festival until Sept. 6.
