Club members
prepare for fair
By Christine O'Reilly
EXETER - The 4-H Beef -A -Rama club held their
meeting at John and Greg Urquhart's last Monday. Set
up as a very informal meeting, the group took a look at
the Urquhart's calves and then headed for the front
porch to work on decorations for the fair. Thanks goes
to the Urquhart family for hosting the meeting and pro-
viding a delicious snack.
Achievement Day
Club members were reminded to be at the
Agricultural building, with their calf, no later than 11
a.m., on Sept. 25. Members were to wear black pants
and white shirt. If they did not have a white top,
Andrea Hern had
extras that mem-

Jeep
The Chrysler Jeep Dodge 'Take A
FREE RIDE Canada' flyer which
arrived at homes during the week
of July 14 incorrectly featured a "6
Months Free Gas" and "Includes
Gas Card Alternative Rebate
- 2009 Dodge Journey" claims.
These claims should have read
"Up to $1,500 Free Gas" and "Does
not qualify for a Gas Alternative
Rebate", respectively.
We apologize for any misunderstanding
this may have caused.

Joint meeting for 4-H
Beef and Dairy Clubs
By Janelle Clarke
EXETER - Joint Beef /
Dairy meeting: The South
Huron Beef Club and
South Perth Dairy Club
met at Gardiner Farms
for their joint meeting.
We discussed how to
judge beef cattle by look-
ing for straight backs, full
rumps, strong legs and
how finished they are;
then we placed them
and took turns giving
our reasons.
The dairy leader dis-
cussed what to look for in
a good cut of hay by look-
ing at its colour, smelling
it, feeling it and the mix of
legumes and grasses.
Joel had everyone guess
the weight of one beef
animal and weighed it.
One member from each
club who guessed the
closest to the actual
weight won a t -shirt.
We then traveled to
Vink's Dairy Farm where
we judged dairy cows by
looking for straight pins, a
full udder, sound legs, a
well attached udder and
evenly spaced teats and
we also did weed identifi-
cation. We identified
common weeds like ladies
thumb, rag weed, sow
thistle, fox tail and lamb's
quarter. We thank the
Gardiners and Vinks for
letting us visit their farms.
Fifth meeting at
Down Farms
We traveled
to Down Farms
and had a
brief history
and explana-
tion of how a
silo unloader works. The
Clarke girls introduced
their three calves and
took them out into the
yard to lead them around.
We were asked to pick
out which animal we liked
best and to give some
good qualities about it.
We reviewed how to
properly rinse and wash a
calf by demonstrating on
one of the calves. We
went inside the barn to
judge flashlights, hand in
our brochures and dis-
cuss our 4-H books for
achievement day. Thank
you to the Downs for the
snack and swim.
