The Times Advocate, 2008-07-30, Page 11Wednesday, July.30, 2008 SPORTS Times–Advocate 11 6-3 loss for Fury EXETER — The Exeter Fury were involved in a high -scoring affair on Wednesday against the third place Balkan squad from London. The Fury battled hard but came out on the short end of a 6-3 loss on their home field. The game didn't start well for Exeter when Balkan scored on the first play of the game. Already down a goal the Fury started playing better defense which resulted in turnovers and allowed the home team to mount some offense. The score remained 1- 0 for twenty minutes until another Fury breakdown meant a 2-0 lead for Balkan. The Fury fell behind 3- 0 on a header that appeared to be a hand ball but the referee failed to see it that way and when Balkan scored on a play that was clearly off- side the 4-0 score at half- time seemed to be the end of the Fury for this night. The Fury started the second half minus two more players when Joe Forrester and Trevor Boersma had to pack it in due to injuries. The team was already missing two key defend- ers in Stu Parsons and Jon Nesbitt who were nursing injuries of their own. The Fury were not to be counted out though. Near the beginning of the second half Exeter finally got on the board. Jason McFalls narrowly beat a defender to the ball to keep the play alive over to Stephen Troyer. Troyer crossed the ball over to Nick Williams who headed it back into the box where Dylan Fidler calmly placed it into the open side of the net to make the score 4- 1. A few minutes later Fidler made it 4-2 by slightly redirecting the ball with his head after a nice cross by Roger Mills. While Exeter was mounting its comeback Fury keeper Shawn Tucker was playing well in net, making a big leg save to keep what looked like a sure goal from finding the back of the net. Shortly afterward though the Balkan squad increased their lead on a long blast that floated over Tucker's head and under the bar to make it 5-2. That goal appeared to deflate the Fury squad but the team kept push- ing for another goal. Pete McAllister's long hard shot slipped through the keeper's hands and into the far corner to cut the deficit to two goals and make it 5-3. This was as close as the Fury would come on this night however as the vis- itors managed to notch one more tally late in the game to make the final 6-3. "We fought hard tonight and passed the ball around better than we have all season against a tough oppo- nent," team spokesper- son McFalls said. "If we play that well in the coming weeks we should pick up a few more points," McFalls continued. The Fury have a couple of weeks off to heal some injuries and return at home Aug. 10 at 7 p.m. against the last place Ingersoll team who the Fury lost to in a shootout in Cup action last month. With Doug manager Fairbairn away scouting, Joe Fulop was in charge for Exeter and said the Express put forth a valiant effort in their game against Lakeside. Fulop said the team put up with the loss of Doug Fairbairn's input for the first time this season and Derek Masse was unable to start the game due to work com- mitments. Fulop added the game was played in less than ideal con- ditions as there was In safely — Exeter Exeter player Adam Leppington slides into third with a triple Friday the threat of rain night in Exeter against Forest. The Express edged the visitors 6-4. McLeod shut the Lakeside bat- ters down except for one inning when they rallied for three runs. Lakeside was able to get five hits and five walks during the contest. McLeod had one strike out. The Express were able to score a run in the fourth as Bobbie Grant walked, stole sec- ond base and trotted home on a long double by Adam Leppington. In the fifth they scored again on a single by Lonnie Hawke fol- lowed by a walk and stolen base by Aaron Patterson. With runners positioned on third and second base and time running out due to the rain the Express took a gamble. Rob Burk singled to left field scoring Hawke. Patterson attempted to score on the hit but was called out on a close play to the plate and the Express lost 3-2. Exeter versus Forest "As the interim leader of the team while the Fairbairns are scouting prospects it is my goal to keep things running smooth- ly," said Fulop. Several players tried to help get the field into a playable con- dition. "The results were less than I would have liked. The person who was to be in charge will have to be dealt with," said Fulop. The game itself started off well for the Express as they jumped to an early four -run lead. A barrage of hits by Leppington, Hawke, Burk, McLeod and Grant plus walks to Chris Gosnell and Masse made it look easy. In the first three innings Terry Hogg had it his way allowing zero runs on no hits and three walks. "I decided to save him for later games coming up next week and brought in a relief pitcher," said Fulop. Four hits and six walks later Forest was tied with Exeter 4-4. This meant that relief ace Masse would have to save the day. Masse did his part allowing one run on three hits over the last four innings of play. The Express bats came to life and they scored two runs in the sixth to win the game. The rally was sparked by sin- gles from Hawke and McLeod plus a triple by Burk. Express versus Strathroy It was just one of those games, said Fulop. "Every player has been in a game where basehits should fall in and don't. "Where grounders go farther off the base paths than expect- ed. "Where the opposition pitcher looks to be OK but has a no-hit- ter intact till the sixth inning whereas your pitchers are pitching well but a series of bloop hits do them in." Fulop added another version might be that the Express were not up for a big game. Some players were away, some showed up late and some were not feeling well due to weekend activities. "Everyone expected Derek Masse to save the day again. Not this time," said Fulop. Masse allowed nine hits in his seven innings while reliever McLeod held Strathroy at bay as Strathroy won 8-2.
