(photos/Pat Bolen) Judges Bruce Hobin and Angela Vieth toured Exeter with local Communities in Boom committee members on the weekend and met at the Olde Town Hall in Exeter Monday morning to meet Mayor Ken Oke, Deputy Mayor George Robertson and chief administra- tive officer Roy Hardy. Exeter will find out how it does in the community beautification program at the annual awards confer- ence in Gravenhurst in mid-September. Communities are given a score in "blooms" from one to five and are judged on the following: tidiness; environmental awareness; community involvement; heritage conser- vation; urban forest management; landscaped areas; floral displays; and turfs and groundcovers. In addition to touring Trivitt Sunday, the judges visit- ed MacNaughton Park (including the trail), Ironwood and Exeter golf courses, Victoria Park, the landfill site, the Exeter Cemetery as well as driving throughout town. Both Hobin and Vieth were impressed with Victoria Park, with Vieth describing it as "beautiful." Hobin, from Niagara -on -the -Lake, said when judging a committee, judges like to see how the municipality and local service clubs are involved. He said Exeter's Communities in Bloom committee has accomplished a lot so far for such a small group. He said a town should never stop trying to improve itself and it's all about developing community pride. "So far it's been great," Vieth, of Waterloo, said of her tour of Exeter. She said the town has beautiful land- scaping and noted many people were working in their yards. In addition to receiving a "bloom" rating in September, Exeter will receive comments on the judges' impressions of the town. (photos/Scott Nixon) Brucefield streetlight stays By Pat Bolen TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF VARNA — Although they weren't asking for it, two Brucefield residents may get a streetlight added after a request to council July 21. Sharon Devine and Doug Swan were at the meeting to request that an $82 streetlight charge be removed from their tax bill since the light is too far away to light their proper- ty on Mill Road. Public works manager John Graham agreed, say- ing the light is 300 feet away from the property and of no benefit to the couple although their property falls within the key map of Brucefield. Bluewater Mayor Bill Dowson said the issue is simple, either a streetlight would be added or the couple wouldn't have to pay the charge. "We don't want a street- light," said Devine. Deputy Mayor Dave Johnston said there could be a lot of properties in the same situation and that exempting the charge could lead to problems. Devine said council was missing the point since the property is classed as agri- cultural land and they shouldn't have to pay a streetlight charge. Dowson said despite the agricultural classification, the land is still shown as in the village but the munici- pality would try to resolve the issue. In other business, a request for funding from Rural Response for Healthy Children was met with questions about duplication of services to program executive direc- tor Marie Tyler. She told council that Rural Response, which has expanded to Exeter this year, helps kids get used to a routine before they go to kindergarten. Johnston noted that 70 percent of the program's budget goes to salary and travel. Tyler replied that the program operates in four hub areas requiring staff to travel a lot and that Rural Response wasn't asking for a specific amount of funding but whatever Bluewater could give would be helpful. ••••••••••••••••••••••• • Be Part of the fit • " 4, Souvenir v • •- , Complimentary -yt •; • • ` .4' Collector's Ili 4 Booklet • • DURING ITS `CANADIANS IN UNIFORM DAY' • DISPLAYS BY THE ROYAL CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE, • OPP,, CANADIAN ARMED FORCES, ONTARIO MINISTRY OF • NATURAL RESOURCES, SOUTH HURON FIRE DEPARTMENT, • EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES AND AUSABLE BAYFIELD CONSERVATION AUTHORITY WILL OFFER A FABULOUS •0 SHOWCASE OF TALENT AND TRIBUTARY. • L _ HOSTED BY EXETER LIONS IN SUPPORT OF PROGRAMS FOR YOUTH AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT • - •• •4 • • •• • •• • • • • • • • • • • ON BEHALF OF THE SOUTH HURON MUSICAL RIDE • STEERING COMMITTEE WE WELCOME YOU AND YOUR • BUSINESS TO SHOWCASE YOUR SUPPORT IN A • SOUVENIR COMPLIMENTARY COLLECTOR'S BOOKLET • • • • • • 10,000 copies of the Souvenir Booklet will be made •• available to be distributed to an expected school- • aged crowd of over 3000 students, and over 4500 • evening guests.
