(photo/Pat Bolen) Changes for SOJHL next season EXETER — The Southern Ontario Junior Hockey League (SOJHL) will see several changes this season when the season opens Sept. 19. With the loss of the Mitchell, West Lorne and Central Elgin, the league has revamped its conferences, schedules and playoff formats. Making up the McConnell Conference are Burford, Delhi, I— Hagersville, Pt. Dover and St. George while Ayr, Tavistock, Thamesford and Wellesley will play in the Bauer Conference. Exeter, Lambeth, Lucan, Mt. Brydges and North Middlesex remain as the Yeck Conference. Central Elgin took a one year leave of absence and will return in the 2009-2010 season as Port Stanley. Each team plays a 40 game schedule with McConnell Conference teams playing each other eight times and the Bauer Conference home and away. There will be no games for the McConnell teams against the Yeck Conference. The Bauer Conference will play each other six times and home and away against the McConnell Conference and the Yeck Conference with the remaining two games to be played within the Bauer Conference. The Yeck Conference will play each other eight times and home and away against the Bauer Conference. The schedule ends Feb. 15 with the All-Star Game taking place in Delhi at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 17. The playoffs will have the top four teams making it in each conference with the winner in each conference to play a round-robin to determine who goes to the finals, which is the same as the Junior B Sutherland Cup format. Two nutrients found in eggs and green vegetables like broccoli, spinach, kale and collardreens might give protection acainst age-related macular degeeration (AMD), one of the main causes of blindness. The two nutrients are lutein and zeaxanthin and they appear to reduce your risk of getting AMD. Many people know the joys of having a pet. A recent report from Minnesota found that cat owners had a lower risk of dying from a heart attack than those who have never owned a cat. They didn't find any relationship between dog owners and heart attack risk although dog owners feel their pets are remarkable life assets. If you suffer from migraine headaches, you are aware of the tiggers that can bring on the headache. One trigger that is often forgotten is hunger due to missing a meal. It's a good idea to consume a meal or snack every four hours. Keeping some dried fruit or crackers in the car or at work is also helpful. Visiting the Bulls ear- lier in the week, the Express again played with only eight healthy players. Nate Burns had to step in as the ninth player despite pulled muscles in both legs. It was a scoreless contest until the Bulls scored six runs in the fourth inning. Exeter pitcher Curtis Meyers breezed through the first three innings but ran out of gas in the fourth. They gained all five of their hits off Meyers in that inning. Terry Hogg came on in relief and showed his ability to pitch in the league. He allowed one run on two hits the rest of the way. The Express fought back scoring single runs in the sixth and eighth innings and two runs in the seventh. Catcher Bobbie Grant solidified his reputa- tion as the best catcher in the league as he picked two runners off at first base. Hitting stars were Meyers with three and Chris Gosnell with two while Adam Leppington, Burns, Justin Hayter and Hogg had one each. Friday night the Express turned the tables on the Bulls as they pounded out 12 hits for the win. "Goose" Gosnell picked up his fifth vic- tory allowing the hard hitting Bulls only nine hits while striking out six batters. The Express scored in almost every inning The offense was led by Tim Eifert who had three hits, including a long triple, plus a walk. Grant had two hits while other contribu- tions with one hit each came from Aaron Patterson, Brian McLeod, Gosnell and Lonnie Hawke. The team record is now 9-5. Fun brings everyone together.
