Youths perform good deeds with `Serve' program
VANASTRA — Fifty-five youths and
leaders from across Ontario and
Michigan spent last week on a one-week
mission trip in Huron County helping out
local residents.
The program, called "Serve," saw the
youths and their leaders based out of the
Vanastra Community Christian Reformed
Church with the support of other local
churches. The group, nine adult leaders
and 46 students aged 14-17 years old
used the theme "Right the Wrong," based
on Isaiah 1:17: "Learn to do right, seek
justice, encourage the oppressed, defend
the cause of the fatherless, plead the case
of the widow."
Participants, who came from places
such as Kingston, Owen Sound, Hamilton,
Beamsville and as far away as Michigan,
spent the week in Huron County doing
good deeds — going to various work sites
and replacing roofs, painting, interior
and exterior home repairs, yard work,
cleaning, helping at second hand
stores and working at
BeTrails.

At thehe end
of each day,
the group returned to
Vanastra for supper
and worship time
with a band and a
speaker. This year's
speaker was Gil
Clelland, a worker for Streetlight, an
organization that helps street youth with
food, shelter, friendship and prayer.
In a press release, Vanastra Christian
Reformed Church member MaryJane
Greidanus said, "It's part of our calling to
reach out to our community in all ways.
I've been on `Serve' myself as a leader
and I always thought we should do this in
our community."

Pastor Siemen Speelman added, "We
want to help those who get missed and
fall through the cracks." He said help can
include working on someone's house who
can't afford to have it fixed.
Co-ordinator Lorraine Kroes of Clinton
also kept the `Serve' participants occu-
pied with sports and games, some of
which were just for fun, others which
were designed to symbolize social injus-
tices.
The youths also had a day off at the
beach. The week was capped off Friday
night with a dinner in Vanastra that host-
ed all the people who had been "served"
at the various job sites.

Walkerton water tragedy focus of speech
PORT BLAKE — The human and fmancial costs of not
protecting our drinking water sources are far too great,
according to Bruce Davidson of the Water Guardians
Network and Concerned Walkerton Citizens, who spoke
June 25.
Davidson powerfully recalled the tragedy in Walkerton
including the human health toll water contamination
has taken on him, his family and his community.
A crowd of more than 80 people in an outdoor tent
north of Grand Bend heard Davidson outline the
chronology of events that led to the disaster and how it

I MUST ADMIT I LOVE SPARERIBS AND I AM ALWAYS TRYING TO

SKEWERS WOULD TOP THE MEAL OFF!
Boil the spareribs in pineapple juice till just cooked.
Mix together:
I cup Honey Maple BBQ sauce
VZ cup apple sauce
I finely chopped onion
I minced garlic clove
I tsp.Worcestershire sauce
2 tbsp. brown sugar
Put the spareribs in the sauce and let sit for several hours in
the fridge, turning a couple of times. BBQ on the grill till fully
cooked basting with the extra sauce. Baste the suggested
skewers with the BBQ sauce as well for a real treat! (Because
you did not put the meat in the sauce while it was raw it is ok
to use it as a basting sauce.) WOW!

He painted a haunting picture of parents holding onto
their children as they fearfully confronted the prospects
for their children's lives and health — asking them-
selves, in Davidson's words, "Is that the angel of mercy
or is that the angel of death?"
"The looks of parents clutching their children was
unbelievable," Davidson told a hushed crowd.
Davidson also shared how the water contamination
continues to leave an effect on the health of area resi-
dents today. He pointed to a memorial to the victims
who had drank water originating in Well 5 and he also
pointed to a table showing $64.5 million in costs associ-
ated with the contamination of water there.
Davidson was speaking to the local Ausable Bayfield
Maitland Valley Source Protection Committee (SPC);
directors of the Ausable Bayfield and Maitland Valley
Source Protection Authorities (SPAs); members of the
Municipal Subcommittee; members of six local, multi -
stakeholder community Working Groups and members
of the Huron County Water Protection Steering
Committee.

Sable is a female, five month old Sheltie (short for
Shetland sheepdog). She is an adorable girl and
has a cute personality to match. Sable is 12
pounds currently and will stay quite small. She
likes most other dogs and would do well with a
family with slightly older children. She will be
spayed at 6 months. If you are looking for a small
breed dog, then Sable is your girl.

Davidson is co-founder and vice chairman of the
Concerned Walkerton Citizens, a group formed in
response to the Walkerton water tragedy in 2000.
Since that time Davidson has made a multitude of pre-
sentations across Canada regarding the consequences of
contaminated drinking water and the need to protect
this vital resource. He also played a key role in the
undertaking of two health studies in Walkerton, probing
the ramifications of the consumption of contaminated
water.
Davidson said he passionately believes that sustainable
safe drinking water is the greatest legacy that we may
leave to future generations.
He was an original member of the Walkerton Well

occurred in that Ontario town in 2000.
