(photo/Pat Bolen) BY Pat Bolen TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF EXETER — The Exeter Hawks new coach knows local hockey players well after sharpening many of their skates for the past several years. Hal Flaro of Exeter says it is an honour to take over behind the bench for the team and says of local players, "they're are a lot of good men and they show a lot of promise." It is the latest role for Flaro in a hockey career that has spanned several decades and several dif- ferent positions both on and off the ice. A native of Cornwall, Flaro notes "I've been playing hockey since before some of these guys were born," but says he is looking forward to it and wants to stress fun and good ethics as well as fit- ness, dedication and disci- pline. Among his learning experiences were at a Boston Bruins training camp in London in 1970 that Flaro said he learned a lot at from Harry Sinden. Flaro started his hockey career playing goal in Cornwall but says there wasn't enough action in goal and moved up to for- ward. He also spent 25 years in the Royal Canadian Air Force and played in the National Defence League in Ottawa. Flaro's first coaching job was the Junior 'D' Zurich Dominoes in 1968. He also ran a condition- ing camp in Oshawa for 10 years. According to Hawks president Phil Potter, the focus was to find a candi- date with good coaching experience and local roots. "We think we found both with Exeter resident, Hal Flaro." Potter said Flaro will be assisted by Jamie Pearce returning from last season and Chris Fryfogle who has experience with the Hawks organization. "We have a core of returning players and will be filling out our ranks with a focus on local play- ers," said Potter "Our league is changing with the loss of three teams from the Yeck Conference. West Lorne has pulled out of the league, Central Elgin has taken a leave of absence for one year and Mitchell have moved to the Junior C league. Potter said the Hawks will continue to compete in the Western division with traditional rivals Lucan, Parkhill, Mt. Brydges and Lambeth. "While Exeter will con- tinue to play the majority of their games in the Western division, they will then cross over into the Central division to play some of our old rivals; Tavistock, Wellesley, Ayr and Thamesford," said Potter. "This will provide an excellent opportunity to gain experience against some different teams throughout the season, instead of only in the final rounds of the playoffs." The Eastern division will play a similar schedule also crossing into the Central division. "The Exeter Hawks are anticipating an exciting season and we look for- ward to your continued support," said Potter. Tryouts for the Hawks start Aug. 20 from 7 to 9 p.m. and Aug. 23 from 10 to noon and 2 to 4 p.m. at the South Huron Rec Center. Fury play to draw EXETER — The Exeter Fury traveled to Scotia Park near Thorndale on Sunday to play against the London Scottish and came away with a 0-0 draw. In a game that was played primarily in the neutral zone, the Scottish had the best chances in the opening half. Off a corner kick, their midfielder was able to get his head on the ball and Fury keeper, Ryan Masse, who was playing despite the flu, reacted quickly to make the save. Exeter couldn't muster much offence in the first half as they were playing against the wind. The second half saw the Fury come out strong. A free kick from 40 yards out provided them with a good scoring chance, but the Scottish keeper was able to get his hands on it just before it found the head of Nick Williams Another clearing attempt by the Scottish almost proved costly as Shawn McFalls took a long shot at the net, but the keeper was able to scramble back in time to make the save. Masse was sharp in the second half as well to preserve the tie, but Exeter's defense consist- ing of Roger Mills, Chris Hern, Stu Parsons and Tom "Mule" Skinner limited the Scottish chances. "We were grateful to have a few spares on the bench today," stated McFalls. "Playing in the heat at 2 p.m. in the afternoon, I could tell that both teams were feeling it. I am glad to come away with a point and we look forward to starting the second half of the season against Taxandria on Saturday evening." Story correction In the June 23 edition of the Times -Advocate on the senior games, Gwen McKeller of Zurich was incorrect- ly identified as being from Stratford.
