Announcements/Community
Update from South Huron mayor
SOUTH HURON — About
a month ago I went to a
conference called Local
Living Economics.
It started at 8
a.m. each day and
ended at about 9
p.m. The sessions
were so interesting
that I noticed few
people missed any
sessions even
though the days
were long.
The material cov-
ered, that was
worth repeating, would fill
a book. The conference
was based on: "We need
sustainable systems with
regard to food, water, and
energy." Without sustain-
able systems, we will
never have security, which
is the basis for our every-
day happiness.
It seems like our way of
life is to make as much
money as possible in the
shortest period of time
and then to show it in
material things to prove
how smart we are. A sur-
vey done in the United
States each year shows
people have been in
declining happiness since
1958, about the same time
that people's lives started
to be consumed with
material things.
At one time people were
happy to own a house.
Now people refer to their
first house as a starter
house and look forward to
buying a bigger house.
About the time the chil-
dren grow up and leave,
they are able to buy that
bigger house. That house
still doesn't bring happi-
ness as they wished they
could have afforded an
even bigger
house than they
bought. The
speaker referred
to these bigger
homes as starter
castles.
The same is
with cars. Each
time a car is
bought we buy
bigger and now
we are into SUVs.
This bigger and bigger
and more and more is
using up natural resources
at an alarming rate and
causing global warming
and excess pollution.
Eventually this pattern
has to be broken.
Municipalities have to pro-
mote social human capital
rather than financial capi-
tal. Your neighbours,
friends and family are
more important than
money.
At the rate we are using
natural resources, there is
not going to be enough
energy for everyone.
Municipalities have to
start talking sustainability
and cutting back on use of
energy and promoting
renewable clean energy.
Municipal energy plans
are a must.
We must change from
globalization to localiza-
tion. Buy your food and
necessities of life locally as
much as possible.
Support your local town
merchants — it cuts down
on transportation energy,
and locally owned busi-

Rebels with a Cause
head to Bayfest
SARNIA — Rebels with a
Cause is on the road again,
this time to drum up sup-
port for a smoke-free
music industry.
The youth Peer Leaders
from the Huron County
Health Unit work to pre-
vent young people from
starting to smoke. They
will join 70 other young
leaders from across
Southwestern Ontario at
Sarnia's Bayfest music fes-
tival today (July 9). The
group will ask concert-
goers to sign postcards
asking Much Music to not
show new music videos
with tobacco use.
The campaign is part of a
larger effort to encourage
youth to "breathe easy,
rock hard."
Huron County Peer
Leader Rachel Cannon
says music artists can be
role models to teenagers.
She says, "When musicians
are smoking in their music
videos it makes smoking
look cool. But what they're
not showing is how using
tobacco is so damaging to
your health."
Cannon says the group
chose Bayfest to spread
the message because
music is important to
youths.
"We're hoping to get
1,000 postcards signed.
Youth groups from across
Ontario are also working
on getting support. We
plan to send 10,000 signed
postcards to Much Music
this fall. Hopefully they will
hear our message and stop
showing new videos with
tobacco use by Dec. 31,
2009."
The youths will be setting
up outside the Bayfest con-
cert gates at 2 p.m. until
singer Fergie takes the
stage. They will have inter-
active games and prizes
with their message of
breathe easy, rock hard.
As well as targeting the
music industry, the group
will also use their time at
Bayfest to educate the
public about the harmful
effects of second-hand
smoke when outdoors.
Cannon says, "We know
that there is no safe level
of second-hand smoke and
that even when you're out-
doors, you can still be
affected."
The youths will be polling
concert -goers about their
support for smoke-free
outdoor concerts.
nesses invest their money
in their community to cre-
ate a better community.
Conserve energy as much
as possible and be willing
to pay a little more for
renewable clean energy.
Future generations might
need some of the energy
we are wasting today.
Recycling is another way
of cutting back on energy
needs.
Without sustainability
programs and behaviour
changes we will be steal-
ing the future from our
children and grandchil-
dren.
